JO Motorsports- anyone have experience with them?
I have a 2001 miata 6 speed that grinds in most shifts. I was looking through ebay transmissions for a replacement, and saw a rebuilt 5 speed by JO motorsports... here's their website...
JO Motor Sports
It seems like they would do a 6 speed as well...
Thanks

Yours is likely grinding due to clutch dragging, not because it's bad. But I can drive it around and confirm if you want?
I've never driven or seen a miata that grinds in EVERY gear due to synchros
I'm with Lars: Don't think this is a good idea, and doesn't look like anyone else does either. There's a reason no one seems to do it in the Miata community.

Saw your post and thought I would put my two cents worth in....
I purchased a 5 speed from Jason Owenby "J.O. Motorsports about a month ago and at the same time a Happy Meal Clutch kit from Fly'n Miata, and a shifter rebuild kit from 5X Racing. That said, I have driven 2 2016 Miata's and niether of them shifted as nice or as tight as mine, The salesman didn't believe me and drove mine. He got out shaking his head in agreement. Tranny is just awesome. So is the chutch and the 10.3lb flywheel, but thats a whole different topic. LOVE my setup !! Just sent Jason a thank you about 2 days ago. Great guy to work with !!
(ok that was more like a dimes worth, but I think you needed to hear it)

Follow up on JO Motor Sports transmission
It's been a few month now and I have put over 10,000 miles on my clutch and tranny set up that I spoke of earlier in this thread. I drove around town on and off the interstate and I think I did a fair job of breaking everything in like it should be. I had to go to Bellingham, Washington and decided that I was going to drive. A fairly good trip from Midland, Texas to Bellingham but I was in the mood and it was not a mood to fly. I packed a bag and jumped into the Miata. First stop Paso Robles, California 17 hours after leaving. Greeted by my daughter I rested and took off for the second 17 hours to Bellingham. After driving around Washington for a little over 3 weeks I headed back to Texas. The trip went smooth all the way up and back and I clocked about 5400 miles doing it.
When I got back I realized that not only was it a trouble free trip but my Miata actually is running and handling better since I got home. No explanation from me for that because I drive it everyday town and highway and it didn't get any different treatment out on the road than it does here. The major thing that I notice now is that the shifting is even silkier than it was. It shifts very positive, as in it almost clicks into gear when shifting. The 5X shift kit is probably responsible for a lot of that. Some of the smoothness I will credit to the Motorcraft tranny fluid. But, I had a 5X shift kit and Motorcraft tranny fluid in the old tranny and it was nothing like this. Just so you know I'm not affiliated with JO Motor Sport in anyway nor am I receiving anything for saying this, hell he doesn't even know I'm saying it. This tranny is the **** !!! Smoothest 5 or 6 speed Miata I have ever driven new or used and I'm proud to say it's mine thanks to Jason's fine precision rebuild. I don't race but I drive very aggressive on the road, that's why I drive a Miata so I can. My sometimes mechanic that worked for Mazda for 14 years has driven my Miata on several occasions. He told me that the only problem I had was the clutch and that all the other parts were a waste of money because there was nothing wrong with anything except the clutch. So when he replaced the tranny he took my old tranny apart and checked it out from front to back and top to bottom and said there is nothing wrong with it, "I told you that you were wasting your money". I believe him that there is nothing wrong with the tranny that came out and the clutch was a mess. But, after driving mine with the new tranny he got out and looked at me with a very strange look and said "Damn, that is a world of difference" "This thing is completely different"....
I had a Fly'n Miata 10 lb. flywheel and Act stage 1 clutch and pressure plate before, replaced it with a 10 lb. Happy Meal stage 1 package..... the only real change there is the clutch is easier to push in now, easier than a stock clutch, but it has grab, I think more than before. So bottom line is, I want to let y'all know that "My" JO Motor Sports experience has been delightful. I am extremely happy with my purchase and believe it will be a great shifting tranny for many miles to come. Thanks for your time that you took to read this and remember I give the man 2 thumbs up for my purchase well over 10,000 miles after install.
