Default Issues with MiataRoadster Shifter... so much play

all three bolts are tight, shift rod didn't seem bent or damaged...

I have to take this apart again, the play is getting much worse...

Yeah, and Bill wont make them out of brass, I just talked to him today. :(((((

But I'll be taking everything apart, and inspecting them. Expect large pictures of every piece in the shift kit.

I'd be surprised if a delrin bushing is toast. What do you do to this car lol. Everything is broken.

This kit is univerally loved and adored by pretty much everyone who uses it. Bill doesn't do brass because it can damage the transmission. Delrin won't.

That play is in your transmission. Put a stock shifter in and I bet the play is the same (corrected for the length of the shifter). I've seen worse than that in beat-up 6-speeds, and I've also seen much better. 02+ boxes are generally better, MSM boxes are generally the best.

The suggestion that the play is resulting from the shift kit itself, and not from your transmission or the OEM-dimension lower bushing, is pure bullshit.

Dude, i have no idea. Everything I buy goes to **** within a few months. The only problem free mods I've done are the flat top, supermiata radiator, and m tuned coolant reroute.

everything else... Megasquirt, xidas, shifter, THREE clutch slaves (from FM) TWO clutch masters... yeah... lol. It wasn't meant to be.

I haven't even tracked the car yet. To give you an idea, I havent been able to get the RE71Rs higher than 118*F

Literally after the first flat foot shift, the shifter ******* broke lol.

Ugh. So i have to replace the transmission?

I literally hate how loose the shift is. I am missing dangerous shifts now. Before I shot the video, I did two separate 4-3 shifts, instead of a 4-5.

Depending on where the play is you might be able to replace parts.

It's your transmission. Do a search for shifting problem threads by me or aidandj, we've both had a similar problem with a particular bolt vibrating loose that caused, for me running a MR shifter, that much play in every gear. aidandj even has a thread about how to take the thing apart to get to that bolt. On mine the particular bolt came loose by the shifter, it holds a cast iron "cup" (that your shifter bushing drops into) onto a machined steel shaft that goes forward into the transmission. That bolt vibrated loose on the cup on both ends on mine.

Mine had to come apart because it was broken, but yes I took a ton of pictures with my DSLR and red lctited the bolt. (Which the factory specifics).

And FWIW after I did the repair mine has held up fine. THough I did clean/loc tight/torque the offending bolt well. When I disassembled both times (each bolt vibrated loose at diff times) the factory bolt was loose, and had minimal thread locker on it.

THat really sounds like the bolt vibrated loose. Maybe the lightweight flywheel, combined with 7200rpm vibrations...

that makes sense.

But yeah, my miata likes to get spanked once in awhile. It makes both of us smile.
