Its actually really easy!
Step 1: take 5 speed shifter and cut off the bottom pivot ball end. A lathe would be best, but a hacksaw/bandsaw plus a grinder works fine! (don't forget to remove the plastic housing on the pivot ball!)
Step 2: Shorten the end by 2/16-3/16
Step 3: Re weld the shifter together (don't forget to take out the delrin/plastic insert!

Step 4: Just use a socket extension (or similar) and a hammer to bang out one of the two pins in the 6 speed shifter housing.
Step 5: Go buy alcohol with the money you just saved![wink](https://www.miataturbo.net/images/smilies/wink.gif)
It works great. I never used a stock 6 speed shifter, but the throw should be similar.

EDIT: Now that I think about it I think my 6 spd ended up coming with a shifter... scratch this post.
OK maybe I am retarded but why is any of this necessary. I am using the stock 5 spd shifter in my mazdaspeed 6 spd. This is all I did:

Also, keep in mind I think the late 6 speeds have a difference size pivot hole, which nulls using a 5 speed shifter.
