Default 6-Speed won't go into gear.

So, I was doing some spirited driving just outside of town and when I went to hit 6th gear and it felt like I didn't actually hit the gear but it went in anyway. As soon as I felt it, I immediately pushed it back out of gear and it wouldn't go in any gear. I was able to force it into 4th and drive it back to my garage in 4th gear. It popped out of 4th once while I was driving but I was able to get it back in.
Once I got it back to the garage, I was able to get it into 3rd or 4th but no other gears. The shifter wont even move side to side in neutral.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
-Wes

Sure you didn't put it into reverse instead of 6?

The clutch is actuating properly. It will not go into gear even when the car is not running.

No, I'm not sure. I have accidentally hit reverse before but it never went in. There was no grinding sound that one usually hears when trying to enter reverse.

Maybe check things out in the shifter turret before you drop the trans and split the case? That is an easy thing to check first. Probably not it, but worth a look.

drain the fluid and check for shavings and check its condition in general..definitely sounds like something internal. Check the shifter assembly too from the top, whatever you can see..

Are 5speed and 6 speed shifters the same? I thought I remembered seeing that they are different. Are you using a 5 speed shifter in a 6 speed by any chance?

And I know on my ebay short shifter the plastic part that goes on the bottom of the shifter totally broke off and made shifting horrible. Cleaned out the turret and replaced that bottom thing with the OEM one and it's been fine ever since.

i have been successfully using the 5speed shifter from my 2000 transmission in my 6speed tranny of the same year for about 3 months now. It has a shorter throw than a 6 speed shifter.

so yes they are different, and yes they do work.

I'm using the 6 speed shifter. It was working fine for about 6 months.

In my experience, the 5-speed shifter did not fit the 6.

Just find a new 6-er.
