Default 6 speed transmission...

I have a link on a 6 speed, but the trans is missing the tail housing.

is a 5 speed tailhousing the same, or is this transmission just a headache?

See the trans on the top right.

not the same, I do recall correctly. The only 3 things the 5 speed and 6 speed transmissions have in common:

Input shaft dimensions
Output shaft dimensions
Bolt pattern (arguable)

Theres a reason that the 6-sp is missing the tailhousing...dude ignored his squeaky driveshaft u-joint, and when it failed it took out the tailhousing with it.

Significant impact damage can also cause it - I've seen a broken shifter housing in a 5-speed that took a big shot to the front end.
