Testing Waters: Supertech SUB + Shims and Tomei VVT cams
Update:
This is on pause, I may try to run this and document for science
Some stuff came up and I'm unsure if I am ready to tackle the dark arts of Piston - Valve clearances with a cam phaser. No shops in the area will touch this project, and aside from mailing my motor out to have it checked to find the intake cam sweep before interference, I am at a point where budget for other repairs and timelines are now in the mix.
I have a set of new (installed but never run) Supertech cam followers, BP6D Tomei Cams, and an assortment of shims. I'm not looking to lose a ton on these since they are for a pretty targeted audience, but I will shave off some cost since hands have been on them. I can forward the receipts for all these as desired. Again, I'm just exploring my options since now I'm looking at a motor rebuild and some body work.
What is being sold:
Supertech Cam Followers
Supertech lash caps
Tomei BP6D VVT Intake Cam
Tomei NB Exhaust Cam
Asking $1500 shipped

Also....After the new head is installed, the current head would be available with +1 O/S valves and supertech double valvetrain. It just needs to be inspected and things replaced as needed as i'm getting poor leakdown in cylinder 2

Still considering. Just testing waters for now. Throwing in stock cams is the easy button cause I can just slap the head on and go.
But I can always try the clay bit. It's just figuring out what angle will become new max when advancing intake.
Gotta do more research on minimum clearances.

My gut is in the same place as m2f. These engines are non-interference in stock form. So at full stock lift, TDC, there is clearance. The cams add what, a mm of lift and a little duration? Even at 50 deg BTDC advance, is there an issue?
I am very much in the pre-school stage of my CAM stuffs education, but have started my research, as this is probably the next logical upgrade for me.

I also thought there where some cases of exhaust valve interference on BP4/6 engines. But I don't want to fuel conjecture without finding links of the actual cases. I'm at work so that's information to be researched later

Thanks AA-Ron That's pretty close then to the specs listed for the cam except the exaust side is a bit tighter.
What I find interesting are the installation notes. Aside from SUB conversion requirements, it says no modification to VVT [angle] adjustment and even the ECU
que??
I might keep these and just document the process and impeding carnage for science since it's hard to find any build data on this setup. Much like the EFR7163; I still haven't seen a completed #sendit dyno run on a miata. It would be sad if these cams where a hot mess for the cost. But meh, new iteration. Smurfette v3.0

As far as I know, this is the first time the head has been resurfaced. It was pulled from a stock motor and completely stripped, pnp'd, new valve seats, guides, SUB conversion and valve train. Only reason I got these cams was because it was impossible to find shims or rather, there was no clearance with the stock 36mm cam base circles. I wasn't comfy with tipping the valves if they where nitride coated and there was a host of other issues with Supertech quality control that just made this the easy button.
I forgot that there were thicker head gaskets out there, but that also affects the squish
