Time to Denoob, again....
Hey everybody,
I've decided its best to follow protocol and denoob myself, again... This is my second Miata with a long time break of GTIs in between. Roughly 6 years to be exact. My first Miata and the last time I was denoobed was a 99 Touring Package with roughly 70k on it when I bought it. My current Miata is another NB, but this time an NB2 base model with 50k on it currently. I'm no stranger to turbo cars and upkeep, but this will be the first time I've actually done the turbo-ing on my Miata. My claim to fame before the previous Miata was my VR6T Volkswagen Jetta. You might be asking, why would a guy who has owned so many Volkswagens (8) be back driving a Miata? Well, to be frank, the Miata is just too fun to drive and with my current station, I have the chance to autocross nearly twice a month. So I bought with the intention of turning in my 2016 GTI (GTI #3 since my break) for a nice kid mover for the family (2018 Tiguans are actually nice kid movers if you ask me), and me to have my toy . I'm shooting a fun partial daily and a car I can drive to autox, run, and back without too much of an issue.
I'm well aware of the search first ask questions later and I am following Shuiend's guidance and doing ECU, injectors, intercooler, and turbo kit in that order. Well sorta, I caught the tail end of Krakens manufacturing of the intercooler and full turbo back setup (sounds like this might be going bye bye) so I skipped a step and bought my whole turbo setup as well as my turbo (RedCamel, thank you again, the turbo looks great!!!). I'm planning to run Krakens full kit (intercooler, manifold, 3" turbo back exhaust, etc) along with a SR20 T25 to get my feet wet. I'll be bolting this to a unopened 02 VVT engine with the aspirations of running a conservative 200-220whp tune. I'm reading up on tuning logic and have started poking around Tuner Studio to make sure I have some understanding before I throw it onto my NA setup. Once the crazy heat goes away here, I'll likely throw on the turbo during the coming fall/winter and get it set for later events in the year.
I'll do my googling but I would love some guidance on whether my almost new looking stock radiator is up to the task and what a proper injector size choice is (I'm looking at EV14 for sure, but I'm stuck on FIC 525-775's or ID 700s, I know there is different views out there) beneficial to give some good overhead for larger turbos in the future, and also the chance to run e85 once I decide on flex vs meth.

Photos as good faith to remove the "I haz trubo dreamz" stigma.
Mild suspension work to correct PO's choice, Konig Wide opens to accommodate the NT05's and some chassis stiffening, bracing, sways + a hard dog M2 roll bar
4.1 LSD I derusted, primed and painted set to replace the open 4.3 current in my base model 02. Not far from the mileage of the car right now at 60k from a 94 m-edition.

I'm actually really enjoying searching up new information and learning. I'll keep up with this thread to explain what I've learned, maybe for instilling hope in the search.
I learned my SR20 based T25 is actually a T25G. For those unaware of what that means, the T25G is partway between the T25 and the T28, just a bigger compressor housing on a T25. Imagine a journal bearing equivalent partway between GT2554R and a GT2560R. This works perfectly as I was shooting to find a turbo that would spool like a T25, but without the limited bottom end. Something I could stretch further as my build progresses into needing a bigger turbo. For those looking, it appears to come off Redtops and typically gets confused with regular T25s.
My next thing to figure out is if the Rev MS3 Basic or Enhanced can utilize factory sensors to create a measure of safety. This is including oem knock sensors, fuel pressure, and I'll be adding a fuel temp sensor as well. My goal is to have AFR and Boost as physical gauges, and the rest as virtual via my android head unit and the bluetooth/usb connection.

Hah good catch. Brain fart . I meant oil temp and oil pressure. Must have missed it while typing it on my phone.
Luckily not. The plan is to have boost, AFR, oil temp, oil pressure and knock. Im mulling over the idea of having it tuned by Mike Angel from BDTuning. That is once I set on a safe and respectable torque limit. I'll likely have the ECU and sensors installed and set up well before the turbo or tune though.

Oh that's probably what 18psi meant. Maybe it would be worth finding an aftermarket method that works better. I want to say I saw pictures of my guy listening in with DetCans but I'll check. That makes me wonder what the preferred method for det detection is outside of the tuning environment. TO THE SEARCH!

Looks like its wise for me to up my injector to something a bit above 700cc for my proposal and goals. I want to run e85 as a measure of safety given the temps out here and its natural cooling effects. I might also be swapping my tuner to someone on this forum and see how it goes for both the NA tune once my MS3 and injectors are in, as well as the turbo tune. So far I'm learning a lot here. Thank you!

Hey bud! Thanks. I went from my second MK6 to a MK7. Much like my 6 I upgraded to the Golf R based IS38 on the 7 and made a little more than my K04. It was fun but I'm done dealing with FWD at 350+whp and decided to get the wife and kiddo a new car to replace our beaten Touareg, a 2018 Tiguan. They love and I love it as that means I get a Miata again, and get to buy a truck as tow rig and part mover

Since Barnes93CB made me think about my old VW's and the connections I made. Here are some photos.
My First MK6 GTI and the my wife's 87 Cabby.
GTI #2 and possibly my favorite. The k04 upgrade was a proper mix for autocross and daily fun. Traded in because having a kid made a two door difficult. You can only do so many Lion King holds before you almost have a drop the kid scare.
The third GTI nearly kissing a cone in autocross at my last base. I was always told I drove my GTI's like a Miata at the autocross.

As you move towards the 220whp range. Are you strictly planning for Autox or also making it out to some track days too? Also beautiful cabby.

I'm going to try and keep the car as a dual hat daily. Drive the truck when I need to but drive the miata for fun. I want something I can drive for the week, drive to the autox, thrash it a little, and drive it back.
Thanks for the love on the cabby. It was a lot of fun and she loved it . It's her "Miata"
