My way-over-budget...budget build thread - 99 Turbo
#61
I'm curious about your eBay turbo. Looks like a T3 copy to me from the compressor wheel (size/fins)- completely different from your Garrett GTX2867R. Did you pull housings to measure the wheels and check fins/contours?
Here's an eBay t3 compressor on the left (next to a Garrett T4 compressor). The wheel sizes will make a bigger difference than AR. I narrowed down my poor spool to a housing swap- from a Garrett to eBay turbine housing (both stage 3 t3). Turned out that the turbine wheels (though same specs) had different contours. In my case the blade to housing gap was excessive at the turbine inducer.

In hindsight, I likely never saw the full potential of this turbo, seeing as how i was unknowingly battling so many other issue while running it.
Update:
Here's a partial 5th gear pull (blue) compared to a previous 3rd gear pull (red).
I honestly cannot find a road that's flat, long and straight enough to make a full 5th gear pull. :(
It may not be perfect, but I finally think there isn't one individual issue holding the car back (e.g. restrictive cat, cam gear off a tooth, boost leak, etc etc), and this is simply the spool i should expect from this setup.
With that said, I really need to get the tune squared away. I'm going in circles at this point I'll reach out to 18psi tomorrow and see if he's interested in taking the case

Next Steps:
As mentioned, I'm going to try and commission 18psi for tuning assistance/guidance.
BUT, it may be another week or three because I'm currently trying to figure out how to pass NJ inspection!!
I really really don't want to convert the injectors, fuel pump, trigger wheel, mass air, etc etc back to OEM so I'm going to be reading about some work arounds in the meantime.

Updates:
Pass at the track (Left Lane) :
- Car is finally inspected
- More tuning
- Skunk2 Intake Manifold (I got a deal and had to jump in)
- Currently maxing our the Flow Force Miata 640cc injectors (or the 190 Lb HP Walbro pump?). Boost taper (due to the the manual boost controller) is the only thing keeping the duty cycles under 100% at high RPMS.
Pass at the track (Left Lane) :
- Peak boost: 23psi on 93 pump.
- Probably about 40lbs of tools/parts in the car including a fire extinguisher, battery booster pack, large set of sockets, etc
- Getting into 5th is a nightmare for me. I was very slowly shifting into 5th so as to not miss the gate.
- Traction is non-existent in first and second. The 195 width no-name tires and 50* weather aren't doing me any favors.
- The car is running out of gear at the top of 5th but shifting to 6th probably wont help.
- I've had faster 1/8 mph, but this was my best 1/4 MPH.
- Below shows a pass vs a e92 M3 with a tune, exhaust, intake.

Holy ****! You're doing drag passes with 300 hp on 195's?
You're a wild one!
Better tires will definitely help get your 60' down by a decent amount.
Glad you had a good time out there.
How's the car running? Any progress with the toonin?

I have a set of 225/45/15's on the way in the mail (along with some 15x8's). It'll probably be a few months before I'm back at the track to test them out. (Supposed to snow today in NJ).
At this point, I'm strongly considering upping my fuel delivery and switching to an EBC. I'm loosing ~3+ PSI from peak boost to redline, but also running out of fuel. But again, I'm not 100% whether my injectors or my pump are the limiting factor

My Christmas gift to myself arrived!
Jongbloed. 15x8. Although they're heavier than 6UL's, they look sooo much better (imo) and are quite a bit cheaper. (Also, I went with the 8inch rim to increase side wall flex for softer street driving, slightly less weight, and better grip at the drag strip).
225 R1Rs are also in route.
