miataturbo.net-like debauchery thread (about the ND or something)

I talked to EMCO about replacing all the gears. They told me they could not use their existing third and fourth if they were to do that and gave me a cost that was far beyond what we wanted to spend on the project. They're moq was very high. Maybe FM could take that on, they have a bigger budget for those types of projects than I do.
Meanwhile we are investigating dog box and sequential conversions for the ND.

A brief history of broken ND transmissions
When Long Road Racing began testing for the GCC (Global Cup Car) in 2015 they were breaking third and fourth because they do not use second year on road courses. So that is all they commissioned from EMCO.
It wasn't until the spring of 2016 when autocrossers started breaking second. By that point the ship had already sailed on the EMCO box. Mazdas Gen 2 box strengthened all the gears and went into production September 2016. The gen2 Mazda box still has weaker 3rd and 4th gears than the EMCO however. The Gen 2 box has seen one or two minor and one major revision since September 2016. Forced induction ND's are still breaking the latest Gen 2 Box.
We broke our original Gen 1 box late 2016 at 148whp on track. Lost 3rd. This was before the Gen 2 was released so the dealer just put another Gen 1 in it. We ran EMCO box for about a year. Pulled it out and sold it because the slightly different 3rd and 4th gear ratios were not legal in SCCA STR autocross. We also sold our Avo turbo kit knowing that we didn't currently have a box that would survive it. The day after we sold our turbo kit Long Road Racing released their Sadev sequential kit.
There is a very comprehensive parts list and a description of the Gen 2 upgrades in a huge thread on Miata.net.

I just emptied my bank account and bought the XIDA ACE's with the BCM mounts. 6 week lead time. Dan laughed at me when he connected my questions on here to me asking him in real life lol. I am THAT guy that desperately wants 15x10's to fit without flares or other work...
I also have a CSF radiator, Verus brake ducts, CarbonMiata grille, Verus canards, Verus hood vents, Verus diffuser, Verus underbody panels, OFH header, and OF tune to install.
I plan on a track day at COTA in late February for my 30th b-day, so I need to install my Sparco Sprints and decide on some harnesses too. I need an oil cooler, but I must have said 1000x how much I don't want to put Mishimoto on my car. Actually, I keep on doing UOA with Blackstone and I specifically asked them if the stock oil is holding up and they said my oil was perfectly fine, even after 1 track day at Hallett and 2 at MRLS. Maybe I suck and don't go fast enough to need oil cooling lol.
I did another track day on the stock 16's and tires and they are well and truly finished. They lost big chunks of tread and the shoulders are worn smooth. My brakes also squeal all the time now, which is no fun at all.
I am going to try to machine down the ebrake arm on my FM rear brake kit to get it to fit the 15x9 Konig Dial-Ins I have. Dan at 949 confirmed that 15x9 6UL's fit with no problem, so that is annoying. 6UL's solve every problem, apparently. I am also contemplating selling both sets of 15's and tires and just joining the hive mind with some 17x9's and 245's. Gotta learn how roll fenders for the first time, though.

Well, I didn't contemplate that for long. Instead of messing around with 15" stuff, which has already pissed me off due to inaccurate sales copy (FM), I went ahead and bought some Continental DWS06's for the stock 16's. Now I can drive it year-round, because we do get the occasional snow and ice here and the DWS06's are rated very highly for that for an all-season. I am going to sell the two sets of 15's and the tires to fund some 17x9 6UL's with some Hankook RS4's, most likely.
My upgraded brakes already fit the stock 16's and will obviously fit the 17's, so this solution should last a long time for me.

This is another reason I steered you off the race springs as the 400/200 work with all sorts of tire options.

On the flip side, if you run an AVO turbo with an custom EcuTek tune, you have enough torque to just run everything in those beefier 3rd and 4th gears. Goodwin's ND just made 290lbs/218whp on the AVO kit we sold them.
I was ascared to blowed the EMCO transmissions. He wasn't.

BTW, Ryan reports the sexy new sequential from LRR was there at PRI, but initial version has max rating of just 260 Ft/lb limit.

While that AVO kit was making over 290+ ft/lbs of torque on the dyno yesterday we had Ryan Passey at PRI show meeting with every company that can make us stronger transmission bits. He reports discussions with half a dozen good prospects. It is now a race to see if we can get the needed bits made before we bust the current box, place your bets! Autocross both days next weekend, perhaps everyone can say some prayers for our current transmission which is a replacement V3 with the EMCO 3/4. Right now the plan is short shift to that stronger 3rd gear as soon as possible.

I spent a good amount talking with PAR (Precision Automation Robotics) in Australia and they are willing to make a full gear set (1st-5th). However they keep referring that the ND transmission is coded as an Aisin unit over there but I only can reference their coding to the Automatic transmission in US. Maybe someone that has better expertise can chime in.

Ok, so that translates to $4500 USD. That is just for the gears, though. So then installation and all that will probably push this to a 6k+ solution.
Playing with gear calculators, an ND running the usual 245/40/17 could still hit 135mph at the top of 5th gear with the stock redline. Nearly 150 with a 7500 redline. So that would probably be plenty of speed, right? I assume you would not want to shift into 6th, or do I have that wrong?

well that rules out me ever buying an ND.
no way im sinking $6K+ into a gear box.
bummer, i like the new design and was going to buy it once they were older and sub $10k
what was Mazda thinking?? dont they see how many people boost their older gen miatas ?!?

Or boost their brand new car??
Its a perforance car, Mazda knows owners will be autox and tracking it. so why not make a decent gearbox?
Why is the NA, NB, NC gear box while not being bulletproof can at least hold down about 250hp and ND blows up at 150?
what applies to used car resales, has the same issues brand new.
I do think by the time i will be in the market for one, there will be plenty of kits to adapt a different gear box into the ND. just like we now have a BMW gearbox kit.
