Default G'day from Western Australia - 1990 BRG

Hi all,

Picked up my first MX5/Miata/Roadster last week, is a 1990 British Racing Green 1.6L.

Started to get into track work with a e46 330ci, but it was an auto, so I sold it and spent half the money on a Miata.

Plan is to restore the car to use as a Sunday driver/track car, and then turbo it once I've cleaned it up.

It's done a ***** load of miles and and currently trying to familiarise myself with the car, and figure out what the odd cut wire originally went to.

After cleaning up the interior and putting on a new roof, I'm now cleaning up the engine bay and doing some routine maintenance stuff.

Here's a couple of picks of the car, and my paint job for the valve cover.
Car is getting some 15" bronze watanabes to replace the hideous chromes 90's spec wheels the car came with. So I painted the valve cover green and bronze to match.

Thanks for reading.

Welcome to the forum. Put your location in your profile so it shows under your screen name when you post. There are some differences in the cars globally and it helps. There are several members here from OZ so someone may be local to you.

I'm certainly happy you are ditching those boat anchor wheels.

When you start tracking the car or adding power you will need to upgrade the rear diff to the 1.8 model and accompanying axles. The 1.6 diff fails often at stock power levels.

There are lots of sticky threads and build threads with a wealth of information. When you have questions do a quick search as you are likely not the first to ask.

Good luck.

OP needs to see about the short nose crank as well.

All done thanks sixshooter. Definitely will be moving to the 1.8 diff when I see one come up, won't be getting to the tack for a while until I've gone over everything and gotten used to the car.
Thanks for the warm welcome.

Cheers ridethecliche, I was reading up on this the other day at https://www.miata.net/garage/crankshaft.html
I'll have a look when I work on the car on the weekend as it doesn't live at my apartment, in the long run I'll probably pick up a 1.8 and build it if one comes up for the right price.

Anyone know off the top of their head what this used to go to? Comes through the left hand side firewall, 4 wires, looks to be brown - brown/white - grey - grey/white
Had a look here but couldn't find it.

Hi, I'm also from WA and I compete in a couple of motorsport events locally in a N/A 1.8 NA6. I recommend you join up with the MX5 club of WA as they have an excellent round of motorsport that is very cost effective.

I started off with a stock 1.6 that a ran up at Barbagallo... my car is a little more serious now though!

I'll be doing just that once I've cleaned it up a bit and are more presentable.

Just had a look at your build thread. Awesome stuff! Love to build a BP someday.

By the way, where do you go for dyno tuning?

Good car day for me today, new wheels arrived and I checked and found my engine has the big nose crankshaft.
