I was kinda sad that I let it go, because that was supposed to be my "ALLOFIT" setup, but I'm glad it went to a good home and is in a properly done turbo NB and being enjoyed

The thing I really learned from that whole disaster is: check your clearances 500 billion times, and when you're sure they are spot on, check them again 500 billion times

The willeywilson school of valve clearance

Seriously, ALL-of-It in the H3AVY PIG. That might be a car that you would keep forever*.

Don't worry, I kicked myself for that repeatedly

Actually I don't even touch heads at all after that. They go straight to machine shop, because you'd have to be clinically insane to do all that work yourself when a full head job at the local place is 250-300.

Use a surface grinder.

I used the proper grinder/tool.
But apparently still didn't do it right.

My Pops uses it all the time, doesn't have this issue.

I surfaced the VVT head on my car by hand, and it's seen 38-40 PSI boost without a failure. I took it to the machine shop a couple years ago and had it checked, they said a 1.5 thousandth feeler gauge wouldn't fit anywhere they checked it. Had it checked again about 2 months ago, still flat. So it's definitely possible to surface something flat by hand. When I built the head myself in 2013 I used a home made valve grinder to tip the valves. Those valves are still in the car today, and it holds lash no problem.

Car runs again. No sign of smoke. Will know for sure tomorrow when we load up the trailer and drive to autocross a few hours away.
