The problem I have with contingencies for otherwise expensive tires is that only a few in each region benefit. Hoosier does not lose money on its program. The house always wins. Restrict tires to less expensive, longer lasting tires then the drivers not earning contingency rewards actually benefit.
Racing at every level is always budget restricted. The less it costs, the more racers show up. Hoosiers are fun but stupid for club racing.

I think Nasa did a nice job of fixing the strong Hoosier bias with the 2017 rules. Toyo and Maxxis got some love.
If you're buying stickers and still not winning, Hoosiers are a money pit. TT guys cycle through them too quickly as well. Racers only have 3 cycles per day and many swap old and new sets during the day to conserve heat cycles.
Regionally, many of us have been buying used 4-6 cycle Hoosiers SM7s for $250-300 per set (they grow on trees) and running them into the low 20s for cycles. You can find sticker R7s in the offseason (I have the last two years) for 1/2 to 2/3rds price at times. In the Midwest, most only run 4-5 race weekends a year anyway, so a $5-600 tire budget for the season isn't breaking the bank. Most seasons I screw around and win a set too.

I also think for car development, mounting R7s onto the car is one of the easiest methods to make the car faster. I know several people strive to make their car faster and some are looking for an "easy" button vs more wrench time into other components, such as aero(random example).
On the flip side, I wouldn't be opposed to running something like a RC-1 if everyone else is also on that tire or something similar. But I wouldn't be happy if we all ended up having to run the super200s that don't seem to last as many HCs and can fall off pretty fast.

There is nothing budget about running TT. Look at your entry fees. $200 per set of tires difference from rc-1 to sm7 wont break the bank, especially if there is a possibility of winning more hoosiers. Big mistake making sticky tire guys go in a class that would require a big budget with aero, power, other modz.

I won a tire today, so I feel like that's a success. Managed to throw down a 1:25.644 (video is 1:25.9 because GoPro died) on MSR Cresson 1.7 CCW with every sector being my optimal on that lap. I think the record is 1:23.7 in a well sorted CRX. For a car on koni sports, no more than -2.5 camber, 205 RC-1's and that weighs in at 2415 sucking fumes (this morning) I reckon that's not too bad.

Rain tires? What is everyone running here?
I drive to the events and looking to see if my full tread r1r's are worth rocking as they are pretty good on the around town/highway travel to the track. (r7s are run in the dry)
Looking also at the extreme contact "sport" the dw replacement but if I am grasping at nothing then i'll leave well alone.

9's, because it's basically a 225.
My build has reached peak mediocrity! Third event coming up this weekend at Texas World Speedway. No hope of getting anywhere near the record, but should be able to keep up with my competition this weekend and compete for a win.
94-97 Pre-Approved Reclass TTE no star 127hp/2375lbs (Actual numbers are 124whp on dynojet and 2420lbs at best, need to trim some fat and get myself a RB header)
+7 Suspension
+3 Torsen
+3 225 RC-1
+4 Blackbird Spoiler
+2 Shimmed steering rack
=19
Getting the car aligned now as I installed the shims yesterday. Hope to get at least some benefit from that, if not will uninstall and try to use 2 points elsewhere, such as ALLOFIT camber ball joints. I would love to run the TTE* of 127whp at 2265, but street car probs and I already bumped up to 225's, which is a huge points hit. I guess I could go the other way with it, request a TTE* reclass for porker status and get more horsepower, but I don't care enough with the rules changing next season.

Getting a bit faster, but still need to find large chunks of time. This lap (2:00.420) is almost exactly 2 seconds off TTE record and 1 second off the fastest SM lap of the weekend in ideal conditions. Optimal was 1:59.8 and likely would have been this lap if I hadn't ran wide in to 6, 8, and a couple of other little mistakes. Not sure I really noticed the bump steer correction and think I might use those points for ALLOFIT camber since -2.5 doesn't seem to be getting it done. Alignment also slipped every session all weekend, so time to throw the new eccentrics in. Still considering picking up a 4.78, but at the very least need to toss my torsen in a 4.3 carrier.

-did a new exhaust since I drive the car about 8,000 miles a year on and off track. 1 resonator, 1 borla muffler, 1 magnaflow muffler. Quieted it down a little bit and in the process got rid of the 2.00" exhaust that I had on there.
May 7th I will be at NJMP Lightning.
-Changed my oil for the first time since east coast championships
-changed front brake pads

I was under the impression stock equipment wasn't terrible, certainly better than half baked setups, but obviously lagging well behind proper seat, harnesses, and hans. It's in the pipeline, but roger that will move to front of line.

Finally got my car out on track last weekend for a test day. Handling well, but a good amount of work to do. Will need to get a Torsen in the car and sort out a brake drag issue up front. Drove another miata that is TTE legal, and ran just over a second under track record on 205 ZII's. Need to get my car on par with that one! Thinking of bailing on this weekends event though...snow in the forecast and only one other car registered so wont even qualify for contingency.
