My title is even more fitting. It is a shame really. Not sure where to go from here. Just paid to have a 3" exhaust made up for my efr downpipe by Abe but I don't think he has started on it yet, just a deposit. Still have my T25 top mount manifold.

He bought that EFR from me. I bought it new less than a year ago, so I assume it was one of the newer 6258s. It saw about 3 hours of track use and about 1000 street miles before I pulled it last fall (parting out my turbo Miata to offset the cost of a V8 Miata that I purchased last fall). I swear up and down that 6258 was working fine without any issue when I shipped it, I'm not the kind of guy to screw somebody over like that. I thought I packed it pretty well, so I don't think the turbine would have been damaged in shipping. Not sure what happened there.
You say no damage to the turbine wheel, so did everything seize up? Is the compressor wheel totally seized or does it still spin freely? I swear I didn't pour sand into the bearing housing before shipping, either! Pardon the obvious question, but did you run the engine at all with it mounted before hooking up the oil and water lines?

There was an early recall on these turbos and this issue was supposed to be resolved. I haven't heard anything about it since. However, the BW master distributor that I have talked to down here said these wheels are very susceptible to side loading and the wheel is known to snap with not very much side load pressure. If the wheel got locked up I am wondering if the shaft was bent or something and the side load from the wheel touching the housing was enough to snap it off. Especially if further pressure was placed on it while removing the exhaust housing.

To address your comments
1) I am not entirely sure on production dates. The very first batch had issues. I will have to go back in my notes to see when this is, but the first batch was introduced to the market 4-5 years ago if my memory serves me correctly
2) The Gamma ti wheel is brittle by design and not as ductile as Inconel or the wheels used by Garrett. They hold up very well to heat, but not to FOD or impact. Ask me how I know and my $1500 paper weight 6758 while trying to remove the turbine housing on one of my 6758s.........
Either way Lex, contact Borg Warner with the turbo pics and item number or production date, They should be able to set you straight (be it a brand new turbo or whatever as it seems you may also have a warranty)

I bought my turbo used, from someone who bought it used. But it was never actually ran. I'll check dates, but I'm quite sure its out of warranty. That being said it didn't have the old investment cast housing, so I guess thats a plus?

Ugghh double post......sorry :(
I thought you had a 6758?? They were not affected (or in very very very limited quantities) by this issue, so the chances of you have one of those (if they have not already blown up) are slim to none. The other EFR which had similar issue was the 9180/74. However, this was all rectified very quickly.

That being said its not like i can do anything about it. I'll just run it and see what happens.

As I recall, this was an issue when the 6255 and 6258 where the smallest turbo options on the EFR line. The 6758 came out after they had a production hiatus to revisit how the turbines where being manufactured. IIRC if these are similar to other MAX phase cerametallic materials, it's most brittle at room temperature.
I doubt your 6758 is worth the concern.
OP, I have a supercore on hand if you're in a bind. Aluminum housing 6758 that will drop right into the turbine housing if Borg Warner doesn't replace it.
