40mm is enough that you have to cut as much out of the front of the tunnel opening as you have to cut out of the back when moving it the minimal amount.
Late edit, the 94-95 mustang input shaft + the camaro tail housing would put the shifter right in the middle of the hole.

Just wanted to drop this here to see if it Sparks any ideas, the flathead bellhousing may be nowhere near the right diameter but the layout lends itself well to an adapter plate. Just a thought......
Speedway GM Manual Trans to Flathead V8 Adapter - GM Clutch - Free Shipping @ Speedway Motors
That one is setup for a clutch fork but they have versions that are clearanced for a hydraulic throw out bearing, there's even a 300$ kit that comes with everything needed to fit to the t5 trans.

There's been similar discussions on FB. V8 Miatas and High Horsepower Miatas.
someone was experimenting with the Miata automatic bellhousing. This is oversimplified, but why couldn't you cut a manual bellhousing, weld and machine a plate to the right center and depth for the T5 (or T56, etc)?
