I wonder if it was a recipient of the Toyota Tundra free frame replacement program? A shop I know became a captive shop for Toyota for a couple years just fixing these.

At least the auto mfg are using better steels/coatings now.
Tacomas had similar problems.

Good, that powerstroke isn't a 6.0. Those 7.3 are great motors. Honestly, after buying my 06 Duramax, it is hard to go back to a gasser. With a power tune and 4 inch exhaust it makes a little over 500whp and near 1000 wtq. It also gets 22mpg on the highway. I only tow stuff heavy enough to drop back down to my towing tune like twice a year. Towing a Miata is childs play for a diesel and you won't notice any mileage change. Those crazies that try to tow them with Nissan frontiers are asking for it.

My luxury towpig is a 2014 Acura MDX. I towed my 2300lb miata + a 2300lb uHaul trailer down to Atlanta Motorsports Park last weekend from Greenville SC. 140mi trip each way, averaged 16mpg there and 18mpg on the way back (about 1 hr of 55mph back roads and 2 hrs of hilly 70mph interstate). No issues with power or stability, and extremely comfortable. I get ~27-28mpg unloaded on the freeway, makes cool VTEC noises and can run the 1/4 in the high 14-second range. Loving it so far!

My Tacoma has frame rust issues from being in chicago all its life and having 200k+ miles. The frames are already weak without rust. My summer project is going to be beefing it up and recoating the whole frame this summer.
If the previous owner would have got the frame undercoated by toyota in the late 2000s (for free he would have just had to take to the dealer) I would be getting a brand new frame on my truck right now. Gay.

One thing to remember is most Class A diesels are pushers, so getting a garage in the back would be challenging.
However, I found one model, called the Safari Simba (or something similar) that has the engine in the front and a small garage in the back. Just a tad short for 'our' needs, but very cool at that.
