Adventures in PTE/TTE

I don't see this changing much among the top cars. Unless you think a points build copy of Dan's car could benefit from an air dam + wing + 205 RC1s instead of 205 R7s...

Since I'm finally getting out to run some TTE, figured I'd post up my build plans. This isn't going to be bleeding edge dedicated TTE, intent is to have about the most damn fun street car possible, while still having a fairly fast regional TTE car. The RC-1 becoming a 4 point build obviously opened up aero for the existing 1000/500 with stock sways and OEM header setup, but I realized yesterday it also opens up running a 6 speed with sways, header, and no aero. I'm not against swapping parts around between weekends (springs, sways, aero, potentially 4.77 diff, etc), but I like the idea of swapping nothing except wheels/tires. I already have a spare trunk with blackbird spoiler, so plan on playing with both setups throughout the year. Texas regions highspeed tracks like TWS and COTA likely favor the aero setup and not wasting 3 points on transmission, but I'm thinking the short gearing of 4.1 with 6 speed and full I/H/E with MS3 on e85 could be pretty quick. The point of the 6 speed in this is maintaining a highway gear, while 1st-5th get slightly shorter than a 5 speed with 4.77. I'm guessing the hardest part of this setup will be getting anywhere near comp weight (2335) with a full interior, OEM hardtop, power everything 97 Miata.
+3 MS3 Basic
+5 Header back exhaust
+1 Intake
+3 4.1 Torsen
+3 6-speed
+7 Shocks/springs/sways (Currently Koni sports, long overdue for Xida's)
-3 205/50 RC-1's

For real!! 1:43.9 at Barber in a Miata is just crazy! I had the same idea to jump up to TTD to get some contingency. Got owned.... I'll run at least the Barber event next year in TTE or D if I still have my CSP car but I'm thinking about selling it and finding a decent Spec Miata.
Making some changes that I like to call improvements to my car. Sticking in TTE for this season, hopefully some w2w action towards the end of it.

ECC-2nd tte.
i/h/e, stock ecu, stock lsd, r7s, xida with rb msm sways.
Saturday morning was the first time being on the track even though it's in my region. I drive my car to and from all the events and the 5 hours travel has yet to work its way into the schdule. The glen is really a lot of WOT, more than usual with really long straights. I dropped 1.5 seconds as of Sunday session 2 but was dq;d. Wouldn't have been enough to get me 1st, but who knows. The 1.3 seconds could've come on the 2.5 sessions lost. Live and learn, stay away from ttc cars that are slower.

Did you meet Nueman(E36 sedan)? He's from my home region and was my nemesis all season. He had pace in PT too but had an incident.
How much power are you making? I made 131 on an identical parts list. Were you down to min weight? (Trying to gauge how competitive the car is vs Nueman, whose car I know pretty well.)

No kidding. Get's exaggerated on a traffic free TT lap too.

She's heavy (2510 with 3/4 tank), HP unknown (I/H/E with MS3 basic street tune), I was ***** footing the last section bc daily driver, and alignment kept slipping, but pretty happy with a 1:52.2 on full tread VR-1's. Record is 1:48.0 on RR's. Hoping with a bit less weight, known dyno tune, proper suspension, and good alignment/corner weight that RC-1's will get within the accepted amount of off pace. Excuse the wind noise, lowest series GoPro doesn't support external mic. Lame.
EDIT: Assume RR's, could actually be RC-1's (car runs Maxxis decals, should have just checked it out myself)...in which case I've got a lot of work to do.

Aside from these last few posts it seems like the majority of you running in TTE have deidcated, trailered, gutted, and caged track cars?
How many of you are driving your streetable TT cars to the track? I expected to be on the low end of prep for TT, but didnt quite realize how well prepped the seeming majority are.
Will be taking my new toy to some NASA TT events this summer. Raced karts and various cars with lots of success for ~ 12 years, but have been out of motorsports for the last 5 years. Just got waivers approved for a comp license so will see about working my way into a seat for a sprint or endurance race this summer too!
My car is a base model 94, open diff, manual rack, I/H/E, stock ECU, Xida 700/400, Supermiata Sways, 200tw 205's on 8" wheels, ELBJ's, full interior W/ BBFW bar and soft top. Will probabaly throw the HT on for events.

You might end up swapping some of your parts around, such as removing those ELBJs(+2), getting a LSD(+3), stickier tires, etc.

I was gonna say, that setup sounds most of the way there for being regionally competitive. Tires, torsen, maybe engine management and call it a day. Other than a CRX everyone is running Miata's in Texas region and I'm pretty sure they're mostly running the TTE (no *) pre-approved dyno. If I had money to burn I'd do a points build NB, but eh, classing is changing next year anyways.

Will be interesting to see what shows up to the Rocky Mountain series events. I've only got one set of wheels for the car currently, so unless that changes I'll be running the 200TW tires. If I can come up with a second set of wheels I'll go RC-1. Also keeping my eyes open for a cheap local Torsen pumpkin. Have a 3.9 Torsen on the floor setup in carrier (for future boost) and don't want to pull it apart.
Will need to address the brakes too, forgot about that! Will probably go with G-Loc 10/8 pads so I can keep them on the car all the time.
This is the second time I have seen mention of the classes changing. Talking about 2018? I have not been able to find anything on the NASA site about that.

^ Thanks for that link! Some very valid points in that thread. I would be all for a new tire rule for whatever TTE turns into. Not into a spec tire in this format, but I think capping the class at 100TW or 200TW tires would be a step in the right direction.
Selfishly I'd be for more limited aero too
#978
Seems like klling off aero and limiting tire choices just kills build diversity/options and will have us all running on "super" 200's. The best TTE/PTE Miata builds don't rely on aero as is since your'e going for POWAAHHH and R7's. It's not as if our aero is expensive anyways. Since I'm running the no star TTE pre-approved reclass for now I'm going to run my spare trunk lid with blackbird spoiler and build a spare bumper cover with air dam. Done. Basically a 127whp SuperMiata street car Will I be winning? No, but if I can pickup some free RC-1's then I'll be happy. The option is always there to bump up to SM7/R7, though. Or reclass for TTE*. Or wait for the 2018 rules to come out and see how things shake down for TT5/6. In reality the fastest cars will follow the same formula, but much like Forza, I like at least having options to play with.
Some of the propositions in there are just like what you see in autocross forums, people trying to make rules for their specific car to make it more competitive or exclude items they want to run on their street car, but offer no real performance advantage. I get that it seems ridiculous to count OEM aero for full points, but it makes less sense to expect the rules to account for every piece of OEM aero for every car and prescribe it points (or not) accordingly.

My opinion is probably biased since nearly all of my racing has been done in "spec" classes through karts and cars.
I read into TT as a competition for street cars; Not a secondary place for full-on racecars to play. I am also speaking about the possibility of TT5/6 in 2018, and not a blanket for the higher dollar classes above that. If you want to atttract people to lower cost competition without having to build a racecar, the rules should favor that. Sure it will favor some cars above others, but that is just the way it is. Could you order your aero out of a factory catalog for that model year? Yes? okay cool run it at no penalty. If you want big wings and air dams, move up a class or take more points. Any car that is running in TTE (TT5/6) will not have had real OEM aero available. SM7/R7 should be banned as you will never see a "street" car cruising around on a set.
The fact that Hoosiers exist in this "budget street car" class means that they are now mandatory for any car that wants to win in a competitive region. That is bad regardless of how nice the contingecy is. The differences within the groupings of 100TW or 200TW tires is far smaller than the diffrence bewtween R7's and anything else.
