Don't the tires that work well on 7's/8's not work on 9's? Aka more expensive rubber and worse fuel economy? None of that ish matters on the track but for a car that's going to be street driven it's a thought. Odds are though, that this car won't see daily driving here most of the time. My 'commute' to school is 5 minutes. The engine isn't even warmed up fully by the time I get there, especially in the winter. I'll make the subaru suffer for ish like that and grocery getting most of the time.
TLDR; You lot are pretty great at making other people spend money.
Then again, 9's aren't really more expensive, esp from what I've seen on amazon.

Truthfully yea, 8s are probably a better choice for a street car. But 9s are soooo good (I personaly would run 9s on a street car, its worth the extra $100 at tire time... or just run 225s...). Hell, just do 11s.

Not sure if I've asked this already, but I'm looking to get a DIN mounted gauge panel. Found some on ebay which should be fine, but I'm debating whether I should get a 2 or 3 gauge setup. Currently have a wideband and AFR gauge, so that's one. Going to get a boost gauge, so that's two. Is there a third thing I should be monitoring? I'm semi tempted to just buy a cheap used smartphone and get an app so I can run torque or something to monitor some inputs from the MS3X using bluetooth.
I get that wider is better, both for looks and for performance. Except perhaps in the wet. Aren't wider tires more likely to hydroplane? And the biggest appeal of wider rims is more contact patch so more G's right?
Haha, the stuff you make is awesome, but I think it's a bit out of budget right now.
Yeah this is true.
Honestly, if I'd bought a used MS3, I'd still have some more money to put towards this. There's one on the classifieds that's been on there for a bit, but it sketched me out a little bit because of a history with a few issues even though rev said it was good when he fixed it last. It's been unused since then which really isn't confidence inspiring. Not that these go bad when they're just sitting.
Anyway, 15x8's are on sale for 103. I found tires for 70 bucks each shipped. So it would be ~700 for new wheels and rubber. I need to figure out what else I need first. I found a set of 15x7 rotas for 300. If I settle, it might be for lightish 15x7/7.5's.
I can sit on the decision till my tires totally wear out. Should have atleast 3-5k miles left on what I currently have. Not sure I'd drive them in the wet, but I need to see what loans etc look like for next semester and how much I can siphon for funzies while still being able to pay for a roof and ramen lol.

I have the (2) hole version of this: Thompson DIN gauge panel works fine, and the center part can be used for lights, switches, etc. it does not bolt in, and seems like it would be loosey goosey, but actually does fine.
This search shows some discussions on the issue: site: miataturbo.net what gauges minimal
Personally, now that I have my car tuned, I'm pulling both AFR (full disclosure, AFR is broken and I'm not replacing it) and Boost. Both are controlled by, and have safety fuel cuts programmed into, the MS3. Gauge pod will be replaced with warning light. This is for a mostly street car.

k
spending way, way, way too much time and energy on this decision
If you need tires, buy tires
buy your performance setup once
If you can't afford the performance setup, you should be able to buy cheap tires for stock wheels for like $250 or maybe less.

Oil pressure and oil temperature are more important than the wideband when driving on street or track. My gauges have alarms for low oil pressure or high oil temperature, which I find useful. You only need wideband on the laptop display when tuning.

The dual gauges for that are pretty dang pricey! I think those are what I was thinking of re: boost, afr, oil pressure/temp.
I think the torque app that connects to the ms3x with blue tooth also has some of that info right? Seeing as the ecu monitors it.

Sure is. Gotta search for it though, actually I don't think
think the write up is on here...hang on, I might have it bookmarked.

I'm using one like this. I set the temp alarm at 260*F.
Premium Oil Temperature Gauge with peak & Warning Prosport Gauges
They are white when the dash lights are off and amber when on. You can have them turn green like factory interior lighting when the lights are on if you choose a different model. They have an audible alarm and the gauge face flashes when the maximum you set is exceeded. It is helpful when on track and the gauges are not in the line of sight. They also have peak memory.

I'm going to look into what info I can get off OBD2 and what I need to do in order to have the MS3X able to do things via bluetooth etc. If this pans out, I can buy a cheap android phone and display all the info on there and get gauges for the rest. Or just use my phone plugged in when I'm in the car. Should work fine even with maps/music running in the background.
Looks like some folks(fooger and faeflora?) have also used PLX interfaces to replace the coolant temp and fake oil pressure gauges and display all the info inside the dash which sounds pretty awesome to be honest.
Lastly, there's the maxi gauge solution which also fits in a radio DIN slot.
I think I'm currently leaning towards seeing what all I can get via the obd info and going to do some reading re: what it takes to make things work for bluetooth etc.

The California crew seems to be forgetting what the next few months will be like around here. Buy something decent and all weather. Put them on whatever you have. Turn the boost way the hell down. My NC will barely get out of our work parking lot at stock horsepower during the winter with summers on. Then when it's sunny and you've saved for what will surely feel like an interminable time but is really only winter, you buy stickier. Or don't drive it for a while, and save until you have to. Also, if you're debating this, 9's may not fit the more budget appropriate rubber, and you may go through several sets with this thing.
Also, let me know if you ever need a hand.

That moment when you put everything back together, put a bit of coolant in and the cardboard water pump gasket tells you to eff off.
Guess we should have used rtv...
My friend is going to leave his tools over for the night and I'm going to try getting the thing working between tonight and tomorrow morning. My Subaru is having alternator or battery issues, so I'm going to borrow my friend's car and tools and he'll check it out at the dealership he works at tomorrow. Multimeter didn't really give us great info for what the issue was.
On the bright side, my ugly heavy wheels are 16x7.5, so I might wait on that for a bit.
