For instance, MS3 has sensor error checking and limp mode strategies. MS2 does not. If your MS3 detects a sensor fault and goes to limp mode, it can not share the event with Racepak over serial because the MS2 serial transceiver can't look for it. Where as the failure can be broadcasted over CAN and easily picked up by other CAN enabled displays.

On top of the other good answers, another problem is that the serial interface only passes certain bits of information that the serial transceiver is specifically programmed to look for. In this case, the transceiver was programmed years ago for MS2. The MS3 has far greater capabilities than MS2, but none of that data is passed on.

I have my DIYPnP connected to my Aim Solo DL via the CAN bus. It is very nice to look at all the data that the ECU has to offer overlayed with the track map. Very easy to
Hook up I power the solo thru the ecu so it starts when the engine starts. I have one screen on the solo dedicated to AFR/lambs, serves as an additional gauge could also be set up to display anything the ECU does.

Thanks for the insights. In our particular car it worked well for two seasons, two Thunderhill 25 hrs and maybe 250hrs of track time. We weren't asking much of it and we never had any ECU related sensor issues. I could see how the lack of CAN connectivity could be a real concern for advanced users.

I am glad that it meet your needs. I really like the Racepak product and wish we had better interoperability when them. I opened a dialog with them about a CAN module in March of 2012. It's gone nowhere. They've lost a lot of sales to AIM in the meantime, and we've probably lost sales to competitors from customers that already own Racepak displays. :(
Nice. What firmware are you running on the DIYPNP?

I'm still trying to decide how I want to do this. My question is can you combine Serial data from an MS3 and the vnet sensors into the Racepak? Judging by 949's list of available channels, I'd use RPM, Coolant Temp, and Voltage from the MS3 through serial to the IQ3 and then use VNet sensors to do the rest. Is this possible?
There is also this (https://www.miataturbo.net/ms-labs-m...s3-ecus-79429/) by Reverant to output the data over CAN, but still only access to the basic serial data it seems. Worth it for what I'm trying? Seems irrelevant, but maybe I'm missing something.
Does the MS3's onboard memory or the IQ3's 2GB SD card have enough space to log 25hours worth of data? The enduro car is also an arrive and drive, so it's nice to see how people are using (or abusing) the equipment. We have video, but sometimes that doesn't tell the whole story.
I also found a Demo set of laps that Racepak has on their website and was able to play with the software a little. I found it to be pretty easy to get the basic information out of it (splits, best time, etc) but I' m sure the stuff that really matters will take me awhile. I'll probably watch those Aim Software to learn some of the analytics and transfer those skills to the Racepak software.
Does anyone have Ben's e-mail? I'd like to contact him about the MS3.

Are you suggesting to use the Racepak RPM sensor rather than the one the ECU is using? Any reason why a different sensor? Seems like this could induce error when tuning or trouble shooting since the ECU is operating off of a different sensor than the one you will be looking at. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you and/or the purpose of a separate RPM sensor.

I'm seriously considering a used G2X for sale that is a good price. To those who have used it and possibly have experience with both the G2X and IQ3 now, how would you rate the G2X?
I currently have no in-car lap timing, so probably the biggest thing for me is wanting to get something with timing and predictive, which this does and well from what I've read.
I'm not necessarily looking for all the bells and whistles the IQ3 offers, and frankly it's far out of my budget range - I just bought several decent gauges, so I don't neeeeed the sensor monitoring/warning system in the IQ3, although it would certainly be baller.
Looks like the G2X can take 3 external sensor inputs, so I'm thinking fuel level, oil pressure, and water temp to replace the three that are in the stock gauge cluster (I like having two water temps for redundancy) what do you guys think, if it's a good enough price, go for it? Or is it too outdated compared to the newer stuff that it's either keep saving in that piggy bank for an IQ3 or similar or don't bother getting anything?
The other option for in-car timing was to just get a an AIM solo, but a G2X can give me all the same features as the solo while also doing several other things better than the components it can replace..

Aim has announced a new sale. in anticipation of the new dash that is coming out. the MXL2
The sale goes. Buy a current generation 4 channel MXL pista dash at normal retail price, it's a special kit that you need to call OG to order it. When the MXL2 comes out you can buy that dash for $600. in clif notes you can buy two dash systems for 2600 as apposed to $4000. you can sell the pista when the new dash comes out or keep it for another project. choice is yours.
