Fantastic thread.
As somebody who's closing on the end of their first season of HPDE, I also went down the path of 'oh that's good enough.'
I lowered my factory seats (foamectomy & rear mount), installed a roll bar + SFI padding, newer (less faded) belts, fixed the AIRBAG light and planned to dual-purpose the car.
Boy was I wrong!
Within 2 events I noticed that the NASA group instructors kept repeating the same stuff as in this thread: Don't skimp on safety. Buy the HANS. Get the seat. BUY THE GEAR.
So like that I went from just a roll bar and padding to an alumnimum HALO kirkey seat, 6pt and HANS, and removable wheel. I bought a truck and now tow to the track.
Moving forward:
-Amazon has drug their feet for 2 months on my seatback brace so I am going to make it a priorirty to find one or have one fabbed ASAP.
-I had no idea spandex was so ridiculously unsafe in a fire. Nomex stuff asap.
-Going to double check all of my seatbelt angles.
-Extinguisher will be purchased.
Is there anything else I can get to make my car safer? From the chart it looks like the next steps would be fire suit (and cool shirt), auto fire supression system, and cage.
Also: To those who either read about or discussed legislating safety... I'd still really prefer that we not. NJ has an entire book on racetrack regulations. The State Police can show up in the paddock and start inspecting your vehicle or keep you from going out on track for whatever reason they seem fit. Since when is a cop an expert on racecar safety? Leave it to the orgs.

What Kirkey seat are you using? They have pre-made braces ready to go.
