This has been eating me alive......
i normally dont post threads, just soak up the knowledge and share some. but for the longest time i've been wondering if the stock Mitsu. EVO VIII intercoolers will fit in the mouth of my 90' mx5 with only A/C (contemplating the removal of A/C, it sure gets hot here in Colorado, but most the times i have the windows down). Can any of you enlighten me? thanks
i know there is one guy (Al Hounos) on here that is running one, maybe he'll chime up in this thread.
would like to run the pipes over the rad., but will run under if things are too complicated.
The reason why i ask is i have access to quite a few of them, since there are lots of evo guys around here that have already upgraded to whatever monstrous intercoolers they normally use. im sure a few of them are just laying around in shops......
any info will be appreciated

If you have a/c you'll run into problems with the dryer hanging down like it does. Otherwise you should be able to fit an intercooler that is 31-32" wide and 3" deep and 11-12" tall.
You can fit a larger intercooler into and a/c miata but it wont sit dead center. You should be able to fit around 20-22" or so. Easiest way to find out is getting the measurements, cutting out some cardboard or something and trying to fit it up in there and seeing if it will fit.

I'd say if Al is running one, then it will fit one way or another. Although I don't know how "crazy" Al is...
Over the rad would likely necessitate a re-weld of the inlet/outlet because of the stock angle in addition to the large size.
Trying to find a pic..
Having said all that, I say go for it.

Just check my thread in member's rides, someone just asked about it. Also I did a thread on my IC piping, so you can see what that looks like.
I do not have AC, and it would take a lot of moving crap around to make it fit, if it's even possible. The IC is bigger than it looks, you'll see what I mean when you actually hold one in your hands.

wow i wasnt expecting this much help. but thanks for all the info, all of you. im pretty sure im going to be removing the a/c soon, so thats definately a plus if i want to get the evo VIII intercooler in that badboy. i think im just going to pick one up so when it comes time to mounting and running pipes i can just assume im stuck with it and i have to make it work :gay: i dont think the inlet/outlet is at too bad of an angle to run the pipes over the rad, ill see whenever i get my hands on one.
if i weren't going with this intercooler i'd be going with the starion anyways, but i like to do stuff slightly differently. this intercooler wont be overkill with a greddy slightly above "stock" settings will it?
and cant a boost controller be used to regain any psi that is lost from the I/C install?
oh and ill check out that thread al hounos, thanks for the reference

Not sure about this, try measuring the space? Remember, that width size doesn't include the pipes. The pipes don't exit vertically all nice like the starion.

Yeah made custom brackets out of sheetmetal. Attached to the mounts for the AC condensor. Ziptie on the top bracket for stability.
I know a lot of people like to use over the top piping with ps and ac, but if you have neither, I think it's as short if not shorter and has less bends if you go under/around the radiator. Clock the turbo so that it is pointing down.

so the brackets were welded on? i have a neighbor that im talking to about doing the i/c since he welds chassis and such for his custom offroad thingymajig....... but ill see if he can just throw a bracket or two on there.
you may be right as far as the over the rad setup, cause the way i had imagined would take at least four 90* turns. if i clock the turbo towards the ground, it would take maybe one/two 90* turns and a couple mild ones. thanks for the enlightenment.
