Rather than make a thread to clutter up the forums I figured I'd post here.
Let's say I purchase a ebay kit that is more or less complete with the exception of a down pipe and fuel management.
What can I do for fuel management with out spending $1200 on a MS?
Is there something that will get me by that's mechanical with proper monitoring with a wide band? I know ultimately that I would want a MS but I was hoping to get something usable in the sub $600 range that would manage my fuel under boost so it won't go pow with 7psi.
I've got a 2002 with 80k miles.
I'm sure you can find what you're looking for in this thread.
On second thought I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and do my fuel management properly.
If I get one of the ebay kits with the throw away turbos what is a cheap but decent turbo upgrade? "using cheap in context as I understand cheap is usually equivalent to quality"
I'm looking to make about 200hp just something moderate to put a little extra pep in its step

Now that you made the right decision on fuel management, make the next one and get in contact with @shuiend at MKTURBO and buy a kit from him. You'll actually have something that will last a while.

To be honest I dont have a lot of money to spend. I'll probably start with the MS and a wide band and figure out how to use it with out a turbo.
I'll progress to a Throw away ($600) ebay kit for the manifold and inter cooler. I dont daily drive my car but I dont trust ebay turbos, I have access to a welder but my welding skill are limited to a down pipe and heat shield.
The 3-4k turbo kits like FM are out of my price range.
To be honest I'm not familiar with turbo's other than how they work mechanically.
Ive read a few of the sticky's but I dont have any first hand experience with them. I do understand how ever that like with most things price is directly linked to quality.
Parts list
$1200 MS pnp
$0600 ebay throw away kit
$0300 Misc parts + wideband
$0000 steel exhaust piping - free from work
$0000 steel brackets/heat shield free from work
---------------- total
$1900
Ive got $1200 in the bank currently.
What injectors do I need/will I even need aftermarket ones with a 200hp goal?
What is a decent turbo to spool properly and generate around 200 peak rwhp. I dont mind pulling from a junk yard or buying used.

if you think $1900 is going to be enough you are going to be very disappointed. To reliabily turbo a miata to 200-240whp which is where the stock motor maxes out you will be in the $3000-$4000 range.
Hell, I run an archaic MS1 at 300whp and would never consider running bandaids instead. There is absolutely no reason. And aside from a few idle versus air conditioning shortcomings it functions admirably for how simple it is. But you need an MS2 for your 2002. And they are very reasonably priced when used.

I read through the entire thread, I'm pretty confident in my mechanical/welding ability to pull it off.
I still need help understanding the MS though. I have a 1.8 with vvt. Do I have to buy a VVT controller or can I just ignore the VVT and buy the MS2 from this thread?
I'm assuming that it will be PNP and I can just directly replace my ecu with it.

$1200 MS3 pnp
$0600 ebay kit, includes intercooler, oil cooler, oil lines, turbo, manifold, BOV
$0150 wideband - I know some people cheap out and skip these but this is a must for me.
$0225 Stage 2 clutch kit
$200 misc parts
$0000 steel exhaust piping, brackets/heat shield - free from work I can weld my own exhaust up I only really need to buy a pre built turbo header.
Plan as of now is to purchase a ebay turbo kit on the 1st of next month and start installing it. While I install it solo, I'll save back and buy a proper MS3. By the time I finish installing the turbo kit my self I'll have the funds to purchase my fuel management.
~ it will proably take me a month or so to install a ebay turbo kit because I procrastinate and I dont daily my car.
Set up the car to run on 5 psi of boost with the fuel managed by the MS3.
Later I can save back and swap the clutch for a beefier one then re tune for 7-8psi maybe with larger injectors.
I'm used to a 35 shot of nitrous so I'm sure 5psi off a turbo would be plenty to hold me over while I work on injectors and a new clutch.
Alternatively I can just buy another nitrous wet kit and throw a 35 shot back on.

If you have 1200 in the bank you should leave your car stock.
Because it does not actually have everything you need, and tons of things you don't need. The fact that you don't understand that is the problem.
Ahh
What is it missing other than fuel management (MS3 and Wideband) and the exhaust?
I just want something similar feeling to a 35 shot of nos I'm not building the ultimate, supper efficient turbo 250hp miata.
Although sketchy as hell this makes it sound so simple.
~look at that professional 90* exhaust
~not even running an intercooler like a boss

What you don't understand is over the past 10+ years how many people I have seen trying to go that route that end up with blown motors, cars that run **** tastically, and manifolds breaking over and over and over again. For example do you have any idea who the manifold in the picture is copied off of? Do you know why it is a shitty copy and what the problems are.
To properly turbo a miata and make 160whp and 220whp requires the same parts and the same cost. When I say it will cost between $3000-$4000 on the cheap end I mean that. I can do it cheaper, but I have also spent the last 10+ years learning to do it. It also won't end up being much cheaper then my estimates either.
