i wasnt sure what "carb legal" meant so i looked into it...Flyin' Miata : Tech : CARB information
as my car just passed inspection and had no problems in the state of new jersey, even with bigger injectors, i am guessing it is "carb legal", but i am not a professional. if anyone knows more about this please chime in. thanks

Hey, I am a noob too. And who am I to be giving advice when my ride is bone stock ATM.
That said, a new engine is more expensive than an MS.
Here are a few:
MS1 for $250
MS1 with MS2 daughter board $250
MS2 for $450
MS1 with no price listed
Its whether you can afford to, its whether you can afford not to.

Band aids doesn't mean you're engine is gonna blow up silly noob. It just doesn't give you as much tuneablility (is that a word) as a standalone ECU. They also limit what you can do with the stock ECU. With band aids you can get to about 6 psi and call it a day. Not bad if thats what you are looking for (which I am) but, if you want to go above that you will need a stand alone.
