I'm changing over to a VVT head, and decided to splurge on 949's new reroute at the same time, so my current head is up for sale.
My engine is untouched except the cam, and with I/E/ebayH this head made 140hp on a dyno jet about a month ago. The reroute on it is a 180* thermostat, Soku CNC'd spacer, Yukon hose, and a freeze plug in the front, a simple DIY block off plate, and a fitting for the stock heater core line. MSM valve cover comes with no oil cap or cam sensor.
Interested in the head but have some questions:
1. Is the head ready to bolt on and good to go? Other than the pending valve cover/sensors.
2. Does the head have the msm intake cam installed and properly shimmed?
3. How much total time or miles is on this head?
4. If it was rebuilt/serviced at some time, what was replaced/serviced(shaved/cut,lapped,seals,guides, ect.)
Sorry for all the questions but need clarification on these items.
Thanks!!!
1. Not really. I'd recommend hot tanking the head, skimming the head gasket surface just to clean it up, replacing the valve seals, and checking for good seal on all the valves. I just did this with my VVT head and it cost me $220. Just to be clear, I consider this the absolute minimum for any head I'm about to install, and the typical value of an NB head ($300+) reflects this necessity.
2 & 3. I installed the stock '99 engine with the BP5A cam, shimmed it, all less than 10k ago. I haven't checked clearances since the install, however I dyno'd it on a DynoJet with typical results a week before removing the head.
4. As far as I know and from what I've seen removing it, the entire engine was untouched from factory beyond my BP5A cam install. Head is clean, maybe around 100k, however it came from a swapped NA6, so real mileage is unknown. For all I know it's got 300k and an owner that knows the value of reasonable and quality oil changes intervals.
Bump. Exhaust cam was sold, but the caps, bolts, and sprocket are still included. I'm reducing the price on the head to $225. Either use HLAs and your NA8 cams, or grab a used 99-05 exhaust cam before bringing the head to a machine shop. I should also note that a nearly brand new upper timing cover, pictured below, is included. Just wiped it down with some windex, hence the slight discoloration on the front. It's in perfect shape.
There's also a picture of the current state of the head, including the freeze plugged and blocked off front port. The reroute will include the left over Supermiata front thermostat neck block off and related plugs. I'm also reducing the prices on a few of these things to get them sold.
So to sum up, prices NOT including shipping:
1. Exhaust camless '99 head with new upper cover: $225
2. Soku CNC reroute spacer and all required hoses, fittings and 180* thermostat: $125
3. MSM BP5a cam: $200
