1991 Miata (Mental)

1991 Miata (Mental)
Asking $16,000
1991 chassis, complete 2005 drivetrain and emissions package
Driven about 250 miles per year for the last 5 years.
7,000 miles since complete rebuild.
Wiring, ECU, powertrain, and suspension are all from a 2005. This is a CARB legal swap so its gets smogged in CA as a 2005 (no sniffer or rollers).
How does it drive?
With the extra sound deadening and chassis braces, it’s not as rattly or jiggly as a typical NA. It’s tighter and more like a fresh NB2. Not perfect though. The hard top seal on the rear deck is not quite right, a few other minors noises but overall it’s tighter and quieter than any other Miata you will ever drive. Add to that the tuned 1800w sound system that you can plug your phone into and you have a fresh experience. Handling and ride are tuned for mellow street driving with a passenger, mixed with the occasional canyon run or freeway onramp. Rides beautifully, Xida magic there. Tall gearing means it has relaxed low revs on the highway. Not buzzy like all other NA’s.
The Good Stuff
Painted Razor Blue (OEM color from 2005)
NA Hardtop, no defrost

4 point ASM Schroth ASM belts (have a 5th point for both, just never installed.)
Custom defrost only fan setup. Not as good as OEM but it works.
Currently needs smog. Will get it done for a California buyer once a deposit is made
Diff is noisy

The trunk has keyed latches on it to control noise
Passenger door missing key
The cowl cover is not included. Turbo has been sold.

This is an amazing build, so much detail. More stuff that you can't even see. And what you can see is so cool.
If I had to guess, it's got maybe 2,000hrs in build time over a few years. Driving it, is like an ND in terms of stiffness and NVH. The structural foam and braces make the thing way stiffer than an NB2. Xidas are buttery, as expected. Great for really tall drivers, tons of head and leg room. Normal size drive would just reposition the seat forward. And the sound system, crikey. 1800watts on premium thump. 15" in the trunk. Infinity speakers. Runs off your phone, no head unit. All hidden. Housepartymiata.

Sweet car, I don’t think that’s laser blue though. I think it’s Razor Blue Metallic which was the 05 color. Laser blue is closer to 10AE blue and was an 02 option. Sorry for the nerd rants GLWS!

Laser / Razor... Ok, it has been about 8 years since I had it painted. I just remembered that it was a 2005 Miata color, so Razor it is.

Compression and leakdown done.
All compression numbers were between 182 and 187 psi, but my tool leaked down a touch before I could snap the pictures.
Leakdown were all 0-2%
Tests done hot.
Bad news is I have a small exhaust leak to track down and the Tein hood dampers are not working anymore. Bummed about that, I have had those a long time.
Also did some videos. Will link those up when I am done uploading. I apologize ahead of time for the poor quality.

Thanks for the kind words.
It is an unique asthetic and won't appeal to many people. I imagine that it will end up getting parted out.

Price drop to $12,000
At this point I am keeping the stereo and putting it into my ND.
I am also thinking about decontenting the car and selling it as a starting point for either a race car or a street build.
It would come as a running car (but maybe not driveable.)
I would be pulling all of the interior, roll bar, door bars, seats, belts, front bumper and headlights, all chassis stiffening stuff, and possibly replacing the NB manual rack with a PS one.
