MS3Pro-PNP invalid data received from controller

Hey everyone. I'm stuck out here at Tail of the Dragon trying to help a friend with a possible ECU failure. It's a 2001 NB with a BP4W swap with a a GT2871r running an MS3Pro-PNP. Everything was fine on the trip up here from Florida and a couple hours on and around the Dragon, but afterwards we stopped at the Ingles store nearby, and after idling for a bit we turned out of our parking spots to leave and it just died. It turned off quick and I thought he just stalled at first. I didn't hear the fuel pump at first, so we plugged in the laptop and had no connection. we swapped injector relays with no change, then checked the Engine fuse, which was good but swapped it anyways with no change.
We then realised the fuel pump was turning on, and the gauges would power up but the tach would stick just under 2,000. We checked the LEDs one the Megasquirt and all of them were on. After some quick googling I found out about the F1 and F2 fuse, then checked those and they were good as well. We then used the boot jumper on the board, turned the key and got nothing. We used the "detect" option and got a signal but the Found Firmware and Required Serial Signature both came up as empty boxes. Regardless, I pressed accept and at the bottpm left corner of tunerstudio it read "invalid data received from controller". Not really sure what to do next as messing with the ECU internals is something I haven't done before. My friend says he could smell a burnt scent from the MS3 but I can't confirm as my nose doesn't really work
