What stumps me is why it wouldn't read when too close, or rather, why the cam signal wouldn't read either.

I tested it too close, it won't start, pushed it away and it starts and idles strong. It's probably two credit cards distance now and I snuggled it down.
When I first installed my MS I had an intermittent RPM signal as well. Sometimes it would get the signal long enough to start, but then it would stumble and die. What I found to help was to re-gap the sensor AND clean it. My sensor had a bunch of metal shavings on it which probably did not help my case.
Also it doesn't hurt to take out your cam sensor and clean that too.

Just for fun ,my Hydra equipped stranded me the other day. Same symptoms, called my wife to bring my lap top so I could do a trigger test . While I was waiting I checked a couple of the plugs , I also tweaked the crank sensor out a bit further . Car starts , WTF ? Quickly drove home , ( better to be non starting at home.....) I dont get it but there does seem to be an issue if the sensor is too close to the trigger wheel . I too pulled power for both sensors at the old CAS connector. I'll be checking with a friend that works at the Mazda dealer here , if he knows anything on the topic I'll post it up. Fredb

Default Solved !

The car stranded me again today. New crank sensor , still no start . I was able to get my lap top on it this time , did a trigger test , flat line hmmm . I then noticed the battery voltage was sitting just around 11 volts and dropping below 10 volt while cranking. I don't know about the Mega Squirt but the Hydra won't fire the coils if the voltage is less than 10 volts. Quick jump and I was running again Guess I'm going battery shopping. Fredb
