Autos and turbos work well in drag cars because the turbo stays spooled when it shifts. And there's the torque multiplication the torque converter provides during the launch, which is a benefit.
For those who don't understand how this works:
For those who don't understand how this works:
It took the addition of a small device called the stator to increase the efficiency of the fluid coupling and transform it into a torque converter. The stator redirects fluid from the turbine to the impeller, radically increasing the force of the fluid entering the impeller and multiplying the torque input from the engine. Basically, the fluid exits the center of the turbine and is redirected by the stator back into the impeller. This is a very slick trick and can be worth up to 2.5 times engine torque! This means that at a 2:1 torque multiplication ratio, an engine that is making 300 lb-ft of torque at a stall speed of 2,500 rpm will actually apply 600 lb-ft of torque to the input shaft of the transmission as the car leaves the starting line.

Another cool feature on a high stall converter is the car doesn't automatically shift out of first until around stall. So crawling in parking lots your in D but locked in first gear until 2800.
If my turbo starts to spool around 3500 rpm I would have a 3300 rpm stall converter built so I would leave the line off boost for just 200 rpm. Mega squirt has launch control it would be interesting to see that in action
I like both types of racing equally but drag bang for buck is pretty darn high.

My other other project car is a 1965 cj-5 jeep that I crammed a 1966 327 from an SS Chevelle . It's all roller but the cam and has worked over 1969 camaro heads. The transmission is a sm420 from a 1960's one ton Chevy truck. This 4spd manual has a 7:1 first gear. I bought a set of leather manual honda prelude buckets for it. Am working on cutting out the wheel wells in the tub and welding in a flat floor so I have more leg room and swapping a better front axle.
