Default New Miata Owner, New to the forum

Hi all!! My name is Rob

I Live in Westminster CO, I'm a full time student at Lincoln College of technology in aurora Colorado, I'm going for an associate's in Master Cert Automotive Technician. Im currently in my 3rd semester I have a 4.0 and 93% atandance.

3 weeks ago i bought my first Miata, it is beat to crap, but i wanted a project so this is what i have. it is flat black with a red stripe along the drivers side of the hood. it has Decpticon stickers and badges all over it " not done by me " it has a newer top and some decent looking 15' wheels on it that are also black.

Under the hood it has the 1.6L that has been rebuilt with forged pistons & arms. i did not belive this however after tests at school she does hold up to 217psi on the lowest piston witch is #4 and the highest was #2 @ 237psi.
Currently she is not running due to an air intake manafold gasket that went seriously bad witch caused the crankcase pressure to skyrocket and gave her turbo, 67psi oil pressure and blew out the turbo on both sides.

im not sure about much of its other parts at this time i honestly have not had time to play with it. i know it has some fuel upgrades and i know the breaks suck. it has no raido, it does have 5 star seat belts and a belt support bar welded behind the seats.

to be honest i have only driven it about 12 miles before i destroyed the gasket & turbo but i can tell you what it did when it was running.

I was on I-25 going 65MPH when a corvette (non-Z06) pulled up next to me and revved his motor. I had never actually punched it before so i figured it would be fun, I downshifted to 2nd gear heard the turbo spool then i floored it. I about **** myself as the car " without exaggerating " went from 60 to 120MPH in less than 4 secconds and scared the living crap out of me lol.

this was also when i noticed a crap load of smoke comming from the back witch lead to the issue i have now. i know it was boosting to 10lbs via the gauge. and thats honestly about all i know.

So I am here to learn more about this new toy, I have never owned a turbo before so i know nothing about them or how they are suposed to be setup or taken care of. I would like to use this car for street racing, drifting, & drag racing at Bandimer speedway. this car will NOT be a daily driver because to be honest im not the smallest guy and its a little tight to drive at the moment.

I hope i can also offer Help to others with whatever i can as well as learn.
Thanks for reading and i hope you all have a good day!

So the oil seals are blown in the turbo or you messed up something with the oil feed? I am trying to follow your gasket theory and don't really understand it. Does the car still run? 67psi isn't all that high but if the turbo doesn't have a restrictor inline, you can get blow by.

Welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place to figure this out. The first suggestion you are going to get is to upgrade from the fuel pressure regulator you have on the firewall to a standalone ecu like the megasquirt. Do some research with the search function and post up when you can't find what you want after exhausting that option.

From what i understand, the poor turbo was reciveing 60+ psi PER 1k rpm and there was no restriction in its oil feed line. I plan on removeing the cheap and now destroyed cat and running a temp 4" pipe from the downpipe out the back of the car and re hook up the turbo after the gasket is replaced. im trying to find an Oil Pressure Regulator of some kind to put in the line before the turbo so i can Starve it just a litle bit. the turbo has bad shaft play so i know it must be replaced. i just currently can not afford to replace its turbo atm. and i thought that blue thing was an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator?

That turbo looks like your standard mitsubishi 16G chinese knockoff. I'm guessing with a fuel riser, and the other misc ebay parts that make that turbo kit, you're probably putting down roughly 165hp at the wheel. Welcome to the board.

You can get a replacement for that turbo off any DSM from '90-94 and it will bolt up on both respective flanges. You may need to tweak the oil and water lines...can't remember. Last time I looked a good one at the junkyard was $50.
