technically they'd be the better of the bunch, just rated at 240cc...so a little more fuel pressure to drive them is needed but they have better atomization due to the pintle design.

Tell your friend to not skimp out on the 1.8 clutch and rear end upgrades...

stage 3 clutches are overrated. go FMI or ACT HD in a 1.8L size or go bust.

Thanks for the heads up on the FM clutch. So I would either need a 1.8 flywheel or I could just get the Happy Meal kit right? Is the LW flywheel worth it?

Get a torsen from a 94 or 95 (personal preference) or any torsen from any 1.8.

Or get a torsen from an MSM for strength.

"Why", you ask, "do I need strength if I'm only going for 170-180 hp?"

Because once you hit your goal of 180hp, your goal becomes 280hp; and by the time you hit 380hp.....oh nevermind, just get a standard torsen.

(You'll also need to get 1.8L driveshaft and axles - any will do. If you do end up getting a MSM rear end, MSM axles are compulsory.)

The bigger clutch requires a bigger flywheel.

1.8 clutch/flywheel/pressure plate is a bolt-on* mod to 1.6 cars. Get the happy meal.

*Sure it's 'bolt-on', BUT any clutch job is a pain in the freaking ***!, consider replacing the rear main seal while you're in there; but avoid 'shipwright's disease'

Happy meal? no just the FM is rated for more torque than what you plan on making. A thread recently came up on light according to Sav, yes for track and no for street.

The reason why I asked about the HM kit was the fact he would need a flywheel anyways.

get the 13.45lb flywheel, speaking from experience: it is effortless to 'live with' for a street setup

I run a Streetlite flywheel with a 6 puck clutch and once you are used to it, it is fine on the street/track/autocross

My own opinion of Ft. Lewis is the polar opposite. I've been there 3 times; most depressing post I've ever been on.

If your friend needs or wants to save any money, you can lathe off the wight ring of the stock flywheel. You'll need to bring it to a machine shop, but it'll be there anyways when you get it resurfaced. Make sure to have the entire flywheel and clutch assembly balanced afterwords. A strong 1.6 clutch is more than enough for up to 200 hp, but like everyone has said, you'll probably want more soon. Although along with the extra price of the 1.8 setup, internals will start to go as well with much over 200, so consider that in your plan.

CXRacing FMIC kit with BOV (thanks to the MS)
AEM Uego wideband
Walbro 190
RX-7 550cc
All the above with the basic supporting mods

I figure this setup would have the potential for high 200's, of course to keep it safe though it would be tuned for around 180-190 until more supporting mods were done.

I guess I should PM Brain for some info on which MS setup would be best for my friend.
My 2 cents: No need for 550cc injectors at those power levels. Search for 440cc and you'll consume less fuel.

Also; you don't need the Walbro 190 for those power levels either. The OEM one will be just fine.

I think this has been of of the best intro posts ever. The guy comes in and gives all relevant information, then goes and reads the stickies and comes back with what he has learned. Definitely the noob of the month.
