Get a torsen from a 94 or 95 (personal preference) or any torsen from any 1.8.
Or get a torsen from an MSM for strength.
"Why", you ask, "do I need strength if I'm only going for 170-180 hp?"
Because once you hit your goal of 180hp, your goal becomes 280hp; and by the time you hit 380hp.....oh nevermind, just get a standard torsen.
(You'll also need to get 1.8L driveshaft and axles - any will do. If you do end up getting a MSM rear end, MSM axles are compulsory.)

1.8 clutch/flywheel/pressure plate is a bolt-on* mod to 1.6 cars. Get the happy meal.
*Sure it's 'bolt-on', BUT any clutch job is a pain in the freaking ***!, consider replacing the rear main seal while you're in there; but avoid 'shipwright's disease'

If your friend needs or wants to save any money, you can lathe off the wight ring of the stock flywheel. You'll need to bring it to a machine shop, but it'll be there anyways when you get it resurfaced. Make sure to have the entire flywheel and clutch assembly balanced afterwords. A strong 1.6 clutch is more than enough for up to 200 hp, but like everyone has said, you'll probably want more soon. Although along with the extra price of the 1.8 setup, internals will start to go as well with much over 200, so consider that in your plan.

haha well i guess if you live up there, theres nothing to do, but i go up and stay for maybe two weeks each year, the lake is pretty nice as si sthe bowling alley on post.......and every security officer tends to think im samoan

Ok so after reading the DIY FAQ (great write-up BTW) and searching through some MS threads (mainly Brain's) I think this setup would work a little better for my friend...
Begi SSM kit w/o the FMU
MS (still deciding on DIYPNP or the stand alone from Brain)
CXRacing FMIC kit with BOV (thanks to the MS)
AEM Uego wideband
Walbro 190
RX-7 550cc
All the above with the basic supporting mods
I figure this setup would have the potential for high 200's, of course to keep it safe though it would be tuned for around 180-190 until more supporting mods were done.
I guess I should PM Brain for some info on which MS setup would be best for my friend.
