Default "Ello","did you say hello?"."No, I said 'ello', but close enough".

Do to "phillyb" urging from club roadster here I am. I've been in the automotive world for sometime. I have a friend that contacted me about selling his wife's 91 Miata. There having twins, and they purchased a Fit and a Camery. I've never really been into Miata's, no particular reason just haven't. Longer story short I've decided I may pick it up from them. My general plan is boost (want some where near 400hp), hardtop, decent driveable stance, and clean body, with some type of dope lip kit. I almost nothing about Miata's so here I am.

All I hear is "not reasonable" "reality check" yada yada yada, its dual overhead cam motor. 400 Shouldn't be an issue, with a bored 1.8 to say, 2.0 and a VVT head. Am I wrong? A little D series breaks 400 with mild build. Whats up with mazdas not being able to make that kinda of power?

Hawnduh engines are sideways so they make more power. Miata engines point forward.

400 shouldn't be too bad if you've got the money to spend.

At 400rwhp, you are going to be replacing everything in your drivetrain, except for maybe the block.

If you're going to be replacing everything anyways, why stay 1.8?

Flyin' Miata : V8 conversions : Turnkeys and tradeins

If you're still stuck on building a miata block into a 400hp machine, I've listed all (most) of the things standing in your way:

Since you didn't get it the first time, the easiest way to 400 HP is an LS1 swap and about $15,000 plus to replace everything underneath the car and that's assuming that you do most of the work yourself.

Fooge03, Thanks That's what I needed a veritable this is what needs to be done list. This Will be a "Toy" not a daily so, I'd like reliable, but forced induction isn't reliable...EVER, theres always the need for more, leading to ka-boom.

At $15000.00 PLUS a LS1, I personally need to be in the 1000hp range. As I stated, I DO NOT WANT A V8, Ill go SR20 before that.

It's probably important to realize that if you are from Honda land that 275-300 hp in a Miata will be way faster then the majority of 400hp fail wheel drive (d series) hondas that you may have encountered

That being said - 400hp is a monster in a Miata and won't come cheap - Be ready to invest a lot of time and money in a huge project -
