Default Bought a 14k mi 01 to mod with my son

Well... what the title says.

In 1999 I bought a black 2000 that I autocrossed, did HPDE events and dailied until my son was born in 2005. He is now 14 and developing an interest in cars and engineering. About a month ago I bought a Red 2001 Base with 14k miles to turn into a HPDE/Time Attack car and to autocross for fun. So far he has learned to change the oil, replace a sway bar, drill out spot welds, install a front lip and change a tire, before the new year I plan to have him install coilovers.

The 19yo dry rotted stock tires have been swapped for 205/50 15 RE71R's on RPF-1s. The front sway has been changed out for the tubular racing beat and the sway bar mounts have been upgraded. An ebay GV lip has been installed. An new Ohlins Road and Track DFV's are in the garage.

The plan approximately in order is...
  • Blackbird Fabworx GT3 and harness
  • LSD
  • RB header/exhaust
  • Megasquirt
  • Big Brakes
  • FI/Cooling
  • Hardtop/Aero
This summer he will attend AX events with me and will start driving once he turns 15. I hope he becomes as interested in the set-up as the driving and if so we will experiment with aero. Over the next 18-24 I want to build the car towards "Street Mod" Time Attack guidelines. I joined today because of the Aero sub-forum that I have lurked on a bunch. I was very invloved in the Miata community with my 1st NB and sort-of know what I'm getting into until the Megasquirt in the plan and then all bets are off. Any assistance you want to provide is welcomed.

For some reason this wouldn't post in the original post... the car and the kid.

We are just north of Charlotte. Taking a family trip town near you in January for ODP soccer though.

Bethania Garage is closer than BB for getting a good rollbar.

If you decide to go turbo check out MK Turbo. Lars will hand deliver the kit from Charleston.

I had an early HDHCDD my last Miata with the harness tabs. I definitely want a harness bar this time and I'm hoping the x allows better rear visability than the DD did.

As for turbos I an completely unfamiliar with MK Turbo... I'll check them out.

Welcome to MT! It's nice to see kids that are still into learning to do car stuff. You're also in a great location if you enjoy driving. There are so many incredible roads within a few hour drive of here, it's truly amazing. I have a couple of touge buddies that bring their kids with them on our drives and they usually have a blast.

Welcome. Not too far north of you in Richmond. You shoulda let jr. learn to drive on the beat all-seasons. RE-71s will spoil the lad, they're absolute black magic.
