Since we're talking scopes...
Recommend me please a scope for my 10/22. I'd rather it be in line with a $300 rifle (i.e. no scopes costing more than the rifle) and it be made in the USA. Something with simple crosshairs. Flat black.
Something around 3-7x33, or smaller objective I think. I have a sporter stock with no cheek thing.

Sam or someone recommended one about 12 pages back. I bought it, and like it. I don't remember what it was, but I can check when I get home. Mounted it to my Marlin .22 plinker.
Fairly cheap as I remember, but it works well.

Weaver RV-7 Rimfire Classic 2.5-7x28mm Dual-X Rifle Scope FREE S&H 849431, 849432. Weaver Rifle Scopes.
That's my go-to squirrel hunting optic. You want a 'rimfire' specific scope on your 22 if you're not using glass with an adjustable parallax. It will be friendlier for rimfire (ie short) distances.
For you guys asking about shooting with both eyes open - I was taught that this is *always* correct. Irons, scopes, RDS, pistols, billards, darts you should always try to keep both eyes open. It's a hard thing to unlearn, but I couldn't imagine trying to keep an eye shut while on the scope now. Try clear tape on your glasses over your non-dominate eye to get started.

I think something like NastyNate's solution is what I'll go with. You see a lot of these types of optics at 3 gun matches apparently, which looks like a lot of fun.

Gearhead, 3 gun is exactly why I went with this scope. Ironically, I had a similar scope bsck in '03 when we invaded Iraq. Served me quite well.
I had a 10-24 scope on my 10/22 years ago. After a few upgrades I could hit cd's at 200 yds all day.
I do plan on adding a bad lever at some point.

I too am a big fan of low power variable scopes. I like the Leupold VX-III series with capped turrets. I don't like exposed turrets on a field gun, they inevitability get knocked around. If you get the German reticle or floating crosshair you can use the change in thickness/gaps on the vertical for holdovers. I would also look at Vortex and SWFA's offerings.
Additionally, shutting your front lens cap and leaving illumination on will imprint the glowing reticle on your target when you keep both eyes open. It's common practice for close quarters when using an ACOG.

I took one of my 45 Mosins and built an Obrez with a 16.5" barrel. It took me about two weeks and I think it came out looking pretty nice. There will be some who bitch that I ruined a perfectly good military rifle but there are about 17,000,000 others out there left in stock form. I'm going to the range tomorrow to get some video (hopefully showing a massive fireball from the unspent powder). The goal of the project was to make a rifle that was so obnoxiously loud that people would stay away from me at the range. I wanted to play with DIY crowning but the barrel was too short to stick all the way through the back and into the chuck on my lathe so I had to use caveman methods. The hardest part of the project was cutting the recesses for the barrel band springs and dog collar eyelets (or whatever they are called). Kitty in the background is not impressed.

I run the Prostaff EFR 3-9x40 on my Savage and really want more magnification. If I ever buy another scope for it, I'll probably just get the SWFA SuperSniper 20x and call it good. It's a bench gun for practicing trigger control... I want max magnification so I can see the holes at 100yds.

As for the "naturalist" collectors; there are SOO many Mosins out there there is a reason its cheap. IMO if its not a decent rifle during any wartime period or first gen hex, then by all means do with what you want. I have the original stock to my first russian M44 mosin, and the serialized bolt and original swinging bayonet... and I put an archangel stock and got a massive muzzle break for it.
I will be buying more of these awesome rifles, they are amazing for their rugged reliability compared to price.

Bad. ***.
Is the non-adjustable parallax set at 100 yards an issue for shooting 50 yards mostly?

That Mosin is pretty sic.....
Speaking of which, does anyone know where you can get an aftermarket bolt for the Mosin Nagant with a DOWNWARD angled lever?
I just mounted a scope on one of mine, and it is a bitch to cycle the bolt back and forth, because there is no clearance, since the bolt sits at the 3 o'clock potition, and rotates 90 degrees to 12 o'clock, right in front of the scope, Literally maybe 1cm from it
