Ugly Miata?

Hmmm... fancy paint job on completely stock body? Doesn't make sense to me, although I hated the burnt orange as well. That color combo really only makes sense on something retro although it's an option on lots of cars. The Corvette comes in that color and it's ******* hideous.

I'm not sure where on my website the page exists (I made it quite a while back) but I did an experiment where I soaked a smurf blue Miata fuel lid in brake fluid for 3 years. The only thing it did was very slightly bubble up one of the edges. I'm not sure what causes the problem under a brake cylinder but it must engine heat must have something to do with it as well.

I have left a brake fluid soaked rag on the trunk of the miata overnight and took it off the next day. I didn't wipe anything off because it was a crappy trunk and didn't really care. Two days later all the paint where the rag was looked like it was rusted all to hell underneath from the way it was bubbling.
That just looks like crappy paint from a really cheap paint job.

My experiment started because I wanted to remove all the paint from a fuel lid and then polish it so it looked like chrome. I soaked it under an inch or so for about a week and then looked at it (nothing was wrong). I let it sit for another few weeks and looked again (nothing wrong). I figured that oxygen must have something to do with it so I let it sit on a very wet paper towel for a few more weeks (nothing wrong). So, I took it out back, sat it under a work bench and forgot about it for about a year or so. When I found it again the fuel lid still looked good. I reported the results on the old Miata listserv (is that thing still around?) and a bunch of people didn't believe me. I have no idea why the paint would not come off but it didn't. I probably need to revisit the project and see if it ever loosened up.
