I actually built a pretty nice system. It's a Decware triode tube amp DIY kit, a Bottlehead phono preamp kit, "frugel horn" speaker kit, a OTS 10" MK sub, and a pretty decent turn table. I knew it was dialed in when I could hear the difference between the purple and the black vinyl on Mastodon's two-tone Remission LP. Shaking the walls with 4" speakers & 5W is pretty cool. I spent about $1500 putting it together, but you could spend about $25k if you bought it all new OTS. If you can build a megasquirt, you can build a stereo.

Dang, that's a pretty cool room. Nice monitors.
Usually just headphones for me since I live in an apt. I have a 4.1 creative pc speaker setup but the bass is turned all the way down since it basically pumps into the guy's room below me. I have a Asus xonar sound card in my PC that I've tweaked to my liking. Does just fine.

At work I listen through HeadRoom amp and Sennheisers, at home I've got an Onkyo TR-NX777 running a pair of older Polk towers, which are bi-amped, Polk 12" sub and some Polk center channel. It's older cheap stuff but since I mostly listen to rock and metal it sounds good and shakes the living room. Eventually I'll build a better system with a better TV in here, but having just bought the house last year, I've been spending money on boring stuff.
In the bar area, we have my girlfriends intro Audio Technica turntable and some crummy Logitech 2.1 computer speakers at the moment. I'm looking at getting a nice pair of powered monitors for the turntable soon. We usually put on vinyl when we are just hanging out, cleaning up, sitting and chatting drinking wine, so it doesn't need to be LOUD.
My ears are so damaged from playing in bands growing up and going to see so many metal shows and stuff, I won't claim my hearing is perfect anymore. I still hear most stuff non-musicians don't.
Also props on the Mastodon albums, I think I have them all except Call of the Mastodon, and next month going to see them for the third time in the last year and it will be with Primus which I've never been able to see.

What do you guys think about Monoprice stuff? I've got their guitar pedals, guitar amp, and a guitar which have all been extremely good value, but I've never tried their speakers or amps.

I'm guessing the components they use are not the best in class but with some tube rolling it might work out great. I'm running solid state stuff on all my setups except guitar amp at the moment and I really miss my Schiit Valhalla.
