Just for future reference in case someone is searching through these old threads...
It's been confirmed that the 84-85 diffs cannot be made to work without leaking.
86-88 diffs are the only ones that will work correctly.
I searched through these threads over and over when I was starting my RX7 LSD project and couldn't find any info about 84-85 diffs leaking so I spent months trying to make an 85 work. Don't be like me! Start with an 86-88 and save yourself the hassle!

How common are the circlips? Will most auto part stores carry them? Will dealerships carry them?
I have a 88 RX7 Clutch Type Diff, I am planning on using the axles from my 97', front pinion housing from my 97', Polyurethane Miata Diff Bushings , RX7 Rear Housing, RX7 Circlips and seals. Does this sound correct?

necrothread:
So can you hammer in 1-piece axles with the miata clips or do I need to put RX7 style clips on there? I was under the impression that I had to get a groove machined inside the trunion shafts.
Also, where can I get a new clutch-pack?

what year diff is it?
The problem some, myself included, were that the late model 84-85 units had solid axles. so while everything dropped in place, there were no groves on the 'trunnions' for the circlips to expand into:

It's just splined.
If you source a 86-87 unit, there are grooves cut into the end so once you push the axle far enough, the circlip will grab against something:
