Closest I've come to a "serious" burn was a few years ago during the big southwest blackout. I went out on the back porch and used my MAPP torch to cook a hamburger on a sheet of 1/8 steel plate for a couple of minutes. Then I turned off the torch and set it down on the ground, carried the burger inside, and brought out a bun to toast. Without even thinking, I reached down and pickup up the torch with my right hand, fully grasping it by the tip.
After soaking my hand in icewater* for a bit, I then ate the burger on an un-toasted bun.
Took a while for that one to heal, though there wasn't any scarring. It wasn't so severe a burn that I felt I needed hospital treatment, just a whole lot of blistering / loose skin.
* = note that I calmly selected icewater, rather than bleach or hydrochloric acid, to soak the hand in.

Burns suck. When I was working at McDonalds while in Highschool I was carrying a box of burger patties and went to stop and my feet just kept going. They slid out from under me and I threw the box and reached to catch myself. I just so happen to catch myself on the flat top grill. 3rd deg. burns to my hand and from my wrist up to my elbow.
