Today we went to several pets stores. They host different rescue/adoption agencies on weekends. Found a large main coon/longhair mix who was very friendly. She melted my wife's heart almost instantly. But they have that "inside only" policy, and I'm not so fond of longhairs. We decided to check out the other place before committing.

Glad we did. Other place had several which we had to choose from. Ended up taking home a large gigantic all black DSH. Fixed male, about 4-5 years old. Very affectionate. We have named him "Box". No adoption fee, but I donated 30 bucks.

First encounter with existing cat (Gadget) was not so good. Box hissed at Gadget, who then backed away. At least there was no real drama. Both have now found a spot at each end of the hall, and are just sitting looking at each other. No hissing or aggression, just a quiet standoff. They have maintained that position for half an hour now. Hopefully, they'll learn to get along.

He's all black, so all attempts have so far produced terrible pics. He's been on the move since we brought him home, exploring.

I love watching cats explore a new home.

I also just found out there's a pet adoption center less than 2 miles from my house.

Wife wants a puppy. I want another cat.

We'll see who wins this round...

Hey so i notice that some of you have a bunch of cat trees.

We're looking at getting a second one.

Amazon has tons of them in the $75 and under category. Any brands to avoid or seek out?

dieselmiata 03-02-2014 06:52 PM

Nothing wrong with the cheap ones. I've got one of the super expensive fancy ones and 2 cheapos. The expensive ones are not worth the extra money in my opinion. The're a little more rigid but that's about the only notable difference.

This is the cheapo one the cats spend the most time in. We got it on sale from somewhere (walmart?) for about 80 bucks.
F2083 - Cat Tree 61" to 80" - Cat Trees

It's pretty sturdy and comes in a variety of colors to match your decor.

Cool thanks, so basically, just buy one that looks cool. :)

I can do that. There's hundreds and I have a few days of Prime left.

good2go 03-02-2014 07:32 PM

I can't imagine having one of the larger ones shipped is going to make up for any (apparent) cost break you may be seeing on Amazon. Like diesel mentioned, try a Walmart or even Costco (occasionally they have a promotion on them). Even if the online vendor shows free shipping, it's got to be factored in somewhere (no free lunch). The places NOT to go are the obvious big-chain pet store choices like PetSmart or Petco etc.

concealer404 03-02-2014 07:35 PM

Amazon Prime free shipping. I honestly havent seen any as cheap in walmart, sam's club, pet supplies plus, etc...

I built my own cat trees from scrap lumber and carpet remnants. And some natural fiber rope.

They love them.

We live in a one bedroom apartment, have no lumber, carpet remnants, or rope. A sad and empty life.

EO2K 03-03-2014 11:46 AM

But you has kitties, how can be sad?

Hmm . . . maybe if Lilah picked up on this; could explain recent events, no?

If it took her 4 years to pick up on this, then she's fuckin' dumb.

^This. Don't forget it is just for fun. Nail some shit together and use little nails to nail carpet scraps over it. Cats will love it because it is different and smells different. If you decide to modify it, do it. If you decide you don't like it, chuck it or change it. It is just a few minutes and no money lost. And it is fun to guess what a kitty is going to like. They are all a little different.

If they love it they will end up destroying it anyway.
