Yeah, I came of age right in that funky transitional period, before the internet was accessible by mortals, but after the telcos (and everybody else) had finally started hipping up to the notion of securing their systems. While there was no blueboxing or redboxing for me, the David Lightman trick did still work on a lot of payphones. And while the activities of Mark Abene, Kevin Mitnick, etc., were all going on at the time, I was a world away in a small town, with no real connections to that scene. Until FidoNet, a person's online community was only as large as one's local telephone exchange.
