I've never understood this. Turning is the process of removing material from the outer diameter. But how come all lathe operations also fall under "turning". Even though it's not proper English, I always say turning, facing, and boring are operations and that "lathing" is performing any of these operations.

Sean just wants to turn tricks using his lathe.

or something.

sixshooter 01-19-2017 06:17 AM

He's trying to turn you.

Enginerd 01-19-2017 08:08 AM

I've heard people say "turn it on the lathe." I presume this is correct manufacturing lingo? The process of turning occurs on the lathe.

hi_im_sean 01-19-2017 10:01 AM

I can turn tricks with or without a lathe.

You should see what I can do on the mill.

It probably depends on how big they are and how fast you want to turn them.

I've never heard anyone say the word lathing ever. It's always turn, bore, face etc.

I also need to get off of this site before I dig out the half complete pile of turbo parts in my garage and get stupid ideas.

aidandj 01-19-2017 11:12 AM

I have started using lathing as a verb everytime i talk to sean. It provides endless entertainment.

sixshooter 01-19-2017 11:30 AM

Does that make you a lather?

Aidan doesnt even recall that I have been using the verb form of lathe, or lathed in casual conversation with him as a joke for over a year.

Good troll is good.

capitalcrew 01-19-2017 01:09 PM

Definitely want to see a video of that chip being made. Awesome.

Pics and hopefully vid in a moment. Can't show the forging shop as that's the core of the business. Steel mill rolls (hot side) pretty much destined 80% to China. Insert is 50mm long with 3mm corner radius and depth of cut on roughing passes are usually at full depth (47mm) X 2.0" Feed/Rev.

Part material is all HSS.
