Well, you've inspired me to read pretty much all of the available guidelines published by the FDA and the USDA for proper handling and storage of poultry. (The consumer-targeted stuff, not the industry manuals.) And you're right; none of them actually specify that the guidelines only go into effect after the chicken ceases to be alive.

Though, to Oscar's point, they do recommend that uncooked poultry stored in a refrigerator be either covered or sealed.

AIUI, the reason for covered/sealed is to prevent it from leaking juices onto other things in the fridge. It's a backup mechanism, and assuming it's got drip containment and you don't go rubbing other foods on it by accident, leaving it uncovered shouldn't actually be a problem. Salmonella doesn't leap up into the air to travel from the uncooked chicken to the butter.

I assumed I wasn't in immediate danger of jumpy salmonella. Chicken was in an open bag on top of other things so dripping might have been as issue. I tossed it all, scrubbed the fridge and waited for my food shop to be delivered.:party:

Zero kids so far...

I just set the bowl out on a TV tray right next to the sidewalk. A single lone kid could come by, take all the candy and i wouldn't even be mad.

My neighborhood is over-run with them. It was like an AutoX course driving home, only the cones kept moving...

Sitting on the porch, drinking a martini and eating potato chips while my wife reads "Cars and Trucks and Things that Go" to our son. So far just two groups of trick-or-treaters, both with a mix of little kids and teenagers who should know better, both with a minivan following them up the street.

Just got back from the neighbor's house. Fire pit out front, drinks all around and plenty of candy for the kids.

I was drinking Elmer T Lee bourbon. Never even heard of it before, but it was tasty. Just the thing for a chilly autumn night.

We had very few kids in the neighborhood. I replaced the porch lights with black lights. I dressed in my racing gear with gloves and reflective tinted visor on the helmet so you could not see a face. There was a portable radio tuned between AM stations inside the doorway. It was screeching and turned up loud. It was mostly dark. I had a large bowl with very little candy in it. My air compressor line ran from the garage to the front door. As I slowly and feebly fumbled for candy in front of them, I could see their anticipation grow. They almost wanted to help me pick up the pieces themselves. I would let them see me take out two pieces and, with a shaky hand, eventually drop the first piece in their bag. I would unsteadily waver above their bag with the second piece, building anticipation . Then I would fire off the compressed air nozzle hidden beneath the bowl and the children would sling candy all over my flowerbed. The older children who knew would then later bring the younger ones just to watch them flip out.
Good times.

I was a terrible person and didn't pass out candy last night. A few years ago we stopped counting at 400 trick or treaters.

I had too much to do last night along with prepping for an interview with a differnt company later in the week. My dad stops by (it's his rent house) with 2 of my nephews and proceeds to dump candy on the porch, turn on the light, and leave the front door open while I'm doing laundry/dishes/etc. I had to close the door and turn off the light as a group were walking up to the house to prevent all the others on the street and a house or two down from coming to the door even though candy was out front in a bowl.

Pissed me off royally.

Well, my fiance just got into nursing school. Super happy, even if it means a year apart for us.

Congrats to her and happy for you both. How far away will she be? Will she be attempting to work while going? I have friends who worked their way through nursing school and it was tough but worth it for them. Be prepared for the possibility that you will hardly ever see or hear from her. It can be pretty life consuming.

She will be in nebraska I will be in Oregon. Its an accelerated nursing program, So full BSN in 11 months. So even more time consuming than usual programs.

Luckily my job is quite flexible and I will be able to go see her often, and even be able to work remotely if needed.

We still havent decided if we are going to take out loans or blow all our savings/me live on ramen for the year to pay for it.
