Mechanical ability, basically. A nice backside helps on my end too.
I need someone who can help me fix things, but also has a good understanding of the scientific method.
Running the types of research tests we are responsible for is easy. Teaching someone how the various electrical, fluid, and mechanical pixies work together in a machine is not.
It's really hard to find smart, nice assed people with mechanical skill.
Part of it is the fierce competition in my area. All of the top orthopaedic companies are in one town.

Other pluses include working with me, being close enough to easily visit such MT royalty as Joe P and Concealer 404, and dirt cheap cost of living.

Sorry Ryan, I just dont think I can do that type of long distance relationship. I need something more physical at this point in my life, and for $20-25/hr, you deserve the same.

In all seriousness if I lived near you, id be in. I think I'd be perfect based on the above description. My ass is a little big, but I could work on it for you. Or, you could too.

Anyone ever witness this before?

01 NB
Stock, pretty much everything.
This only happens after 30+ minutes on the highway. (which is my commute)
It happens regardless if cruise is on or not, i just had cruise on in this video to show that when this happens cruise shuts off.
After a while of the needle dropping to zero and coming back it will eventually just stay at zero.

It's a little hard to tell from a short video- is the cruise control attempting to accelerate the car in response to the dropouts in the speedometer indication?

Speedometer cable?

Sorry, I looked at your profile and saw 1994 Miata, missed 01 NB in your original post. Yes, sender.

Your speedometer sending unit is going out. I had the same problem with my 2001 a couple years ago.

I got my replacement from Rockauto unless I am mistaken.

While you are down there, check for reasons why it could have gone bad. In my case I had something leaking oil (I can't remember what) that was coating the sensor in oil.

I do believe i have a rear main leaking on this car (not worth it to fix).
Dead NB Speedometer Fix ? revlimiter.net

This does seem like the issue. I'll take a look tomorrow. Thanks for the insight!

Cruise has no affect, it simply just shuts off when the gauge dies.
Which would make sense if the sending unit was dying.

Edit* Joe, if i edit the post with a youtube link in it the video does not stay embedded it becomes a hyperlink. This is an issue with this forum. I actually edited my post again to fix the broken youtube link as i see you also did.

I signed the 1,000,000th miata today. They also had miata #15 there, still beautiful.

HYUUUUGE Bonus points if you can guess the last name of the exceptionally large family (some pictured) with which he regularly pals around.

Isn't that the family where the oldest kid lived in DC and got caught getting hookers or something? Duggers?

i know and I did.
The video was embedded, but then I edited my post and it turned into a hyperlink. So I had to go back again and reapply the link in the content.

Moore family?

On a side note, Narcos season 2 did not disappoint. Downloaded and watched it in 2 evenings.
And then, we discovered Humans.
Reminded me of "This is not my life" in a strange way.
Limited(ish) premise, well thought out plot, clever dialogue and very decent story telling.
We just devoured Humans, finished that within the space of a 24 hour period.

News and everything else on TV is just a sad comedy these days. Better watch some quality shows after dinner.

I just started into season 2 of Narcos last night. Have you tried "Mr. Robot" or "Orphan Black" ?
On the lighter side, there's always "Silicon Valley".

So my car is using excessive amounts of oil.
By excessive, I mean just over a liter of oil in about 200 km (120 miles or so).

A search pointed at oil jets as a possible culprit.
I have JE pistons which are quite similar to Wisecos with the oil drain ports on the lower lip of the oil control ringlands, and the jets shoot their load right between those rings, overwhelming any "control" function.
Anyway.

I borrowed a leakdown tester, and promptly found out the second "percentage" gauge is busted. I used it anyway. The idea was to at least to pinpoint where the leak was, and screw the percentage for now. I know it drinks and farts oil.

All four cylinders leak past the rings. No noise/hissing at intake or exhaust, no bubbles or anything at the radiator neck, but plenty at the 710 cap and the dipstick.
Funny thing, if I put the oil cap back on while listening through the dipstick, it just gurgles for a while.

I did a comp test, too. Results were within 1-2 psi of each other, and pretty much identical to a previous test I had done back when the engine was fresh and healthy.
So, top rings are good.

As the next logical step, I poured liberal amounts of a homemade penetrant into each cylinder (about 1/2" deep), rocked the engine back and forth a bit, put the plugs back on and left the car to sit overnight.

Homemade penetrant is a 50/50 mix of Dexron 2 ATF and acetone.

I just wanna see if the oil control rings are stuck/gummed up somehow, and whether or not freeing them up will help.
I will then remove the engine, check ptw clearance, do a hone, delete oil jets and put new rings on.

Only 30K miles since the rebuild, and this really bothers me.

How is your weekend so far?

Joe Perez 09-10-2016 08:18 PM

Sucks.

I just discovered that a nearby liquor store is selling 24 pack cans of Two Hearted Ale for $20. Not a bad weekend
