What I find especially interesting, in the context of the AN/FSQ-7 being such an amazingly massive computer (the largest, most expensive, and power-hungriest computer ever built, by far) is that it wasn't a one-off deal. They built twenty-four of them, all paid for courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. Taxpayer, as part of the SAGE air defense system.

proper response is: great. Since you are the one who found this issue, please devise an experiment based on your best hypothesis and test it. i.e. remove the shield and see if hte problem persists.

They will only sell me the pistons and not the rings, because I'm not a racerboi.

Truth:

All hard drives are the same, in that you can't reliably predict whether any one specific unit will fail during any specific timeframe.
