Incredible movie. Makes every other submarine film feel like a Disney movie.
Interesting point (I have the 3.5 hour "director's cut" version, so I don't know if this varies from one version to the next): I elected to watch it with the dubbed English soundtrack (the movie is German, for those who don't know) and I'd accidentally left the English subtitles on as well. I noticed right away that there is a massive and almost total discrepancy between the spoken English soundtrack and the English subtitles. I don't mean simply that the subtitles are somewhat more concise (although they are) but rather that it seems like they were working from two totally different scripts. The general idea is the same between the two, but the words, the imagery, totally different. In general, I found the English audio track to be much richer and more vivid than the subtitle track, and I suspect that it's much closer to the original dialog in both form and meaning, to the point where I'd advise anybody, even a purist who doesn't believe in dubbed language tracks, to choose the dubbed track over the original soundtrack w/ subtitles. |
