Read a book in bed as a good way to get lots of sleep? Pfah. It usually goes more like this:
11PM: go to bed, pick up book
Midnight: Hm, this is good. What time is it? OK, I can read a bit more
1AM: I can't stop now, this is good!
2AM: Ugh, I really need to go to sleep, I'll just finish this chapter.
3AM: Well, I'm almost done, there's only 100 pages left.
4AM: You idiot, you've done it again. Good book though.

I should not have insisted on polishing off the 2 liter of Pepsi I got when I picked up an order at Hungry Howies last week. I thought I was getting a good deal, little had I known what price I would actually pay.
I also went to bed earlier than normal. When I woke up in the night, I thought it was around 3 or 4 am. To my horror it was only like 11 pm, and it was a struggle till almost 4 am. I worked, I played an instrument, I read, I....... Nothing seemed to work.
I did sleep good last night though.

Thirteen years in the air force taught me how to fall asleep during any briefing, meeting, or bullshit cbt...while still clicking the mouse to get through it. I even learned to sleep while flying my D-35K.

In all my years on earth, the only time I watch tv in bed is when I am at a hotel. A tv has never been in my bedroom.

It's not that I have a lot of trouble falling asleep, but I tend to be a light sleeper. Any sort of noise is enough to wake me. Never been able to reliably sleep on trains, airplanes, busses, etc. I have to wear earplugs to sleep here in the city.

<p>Try a sleep mask. You may think you don't need one, but I got one for my gf recently and it amazed her. She never consciously woke up because of light before, but now she sleeps through the night with ease.</p>

I envy people like you and the homeless who I see asleep on subway platform and under bridges.
It's not that I have a lot of trouble falling asleep, but I tend to be a light sleeper. Any sort of noise is enough to wake me. Never been able to reliably sleep on trains, airplanes, busses, etc. I have to wear earplugs to sleep here in the city.

Pager tones, my alarm clock, a kitten in distress, or physical touch will make me wide awake with my boots on in under 3 seconds.
Anything other than that will not disrupt my alpha waves.
The part-time scientist in me really wants to do a study on the sleep patterns of first responders.

<p>I'm curious whether you actually wake up to other stimuli, and some subconscious part of you decides not to remember it. Or if you actually stay asleep through all of it.</p>
