How foolish is it to move to Houston with my GF temporarily?
#21
Long distance sucks. It's hard. You argue over the phone, which is impossible to win. You worry constantly that some rich kid PhD student is putting the moves on your old lady. It makes you crazy. And if you guys really work, then it makes you stronger.
Plus you're pretty much guaranteed to get to smash it every time you see her

Let her move. If you love each other it will work out. Take your time and find something worth it here if you really want to come down. If you are worried about where she will stay, then give us her budget and some of us in Houston could make suggestions. I can tell you were you want to be and where even Google earth does not have ground level camera views.
But if your down here I'll have to drive you car

This happens all the time in the private sector, too. The only difference is that after it's all said and done, they perform a margin analysis on the project and then nominate a scapegoat (always from the project-execution side, never from sales) to blame for why the project lost money. "Because we massively overpromised on our capabilities, sold it for 20% less than we projected it would cost to execute and then gave away a $half-million worth of change-orders for free after the order was signed, all on the specific orders of the national sales manager that we were to win this project at any cost" is rarely considered to be an acceptable answer.

I might let you drive it. Emphasis on might.

Long distance relationships suck so bad. They can be done, but would arguably cause as much strain on your relationship as you would have from a job you didn't like, if not more. Trust me. If you really do think you guys will work out, then I say move. If things are meant to be then everything will fall into place given time and patience. You've got nothing to lose it sounds like with the shitty job you've got now, and if you really like this girl then that's even more of a reason. **** it and move. Lol.

Sugarland is also nice. Katy (south of I-10) is nice. Near rice is hit or miss.
They have rice graduate apartments near rice. Has she looked into those?

I have like them. Most of them are good. A lot of my friends (and I), as well as co-works have or are living in Camden apartments in Houston. Nothing but good things to say.

As said by others in this thread, if it's meant to be, it's meant to be but you can always find satisfaction in a Home Depot men's room.
My cousin lives in a Camden apartment. It's a really nice place but the employees are all idiots.

Get on USA jobs.

Here, I did the hard part. I would take a pay cut for job security, and I have no clue what you make now. It looked like all the positions that you might fit in on there were low to mid 30k. I will let you look, and hopefully we found you something.
I feel you from the standpoint of government job security, and lord knows they don't fire that much for poor employment. The civilian unions pretty much let you get away with murder anyways. I also would try to ensure that you had a job secured before you head that way. At the very least, you can help contribure to her finding a non crusty apartment. I think you need to do some thinking. I mean hell, if you know you are going to marry her, you should. Moving in with someone is a huge step. I had a relationship going great until I moved in with someone for 3 months. I went from thinking the world of them, to can't stand pretty quick. The long distance thing sucks too. It sounds like you need to job hunt like a ****. That is your best answer.

My then-GF now wife and I met in grad school while we were getting our PhDs, in Houston. Then about 3 years into my doctorate (with a 6+ year average time to graduate from my program) my boss moved the lab up to a different institute in Seattle and I had a big decision to make. Stay in H-town and throw away the last 3 years starting over in a new lab, or move away from the girl I knew I was going to marry.
I moved, and we lived apart for a bit over 3 years. It wasn't driving distance either so we only saw each other for a long weekend every 4-6 weeks, and a week or two around the holidays. We made it work, got engaged about two years into that, and now we've been married for 5+ years.
****, you're only 4 hours and $35 worth of gas away, so you could see her every weekend if you want. I guess it comes down to the level of commitment in that relationship, but my experience is that's a workable situation, especially if you don't want to give up your job just yet. Of course you can be looking for jobs in the mean time.
One of our other grad school friends decided that his government postdoc wasn't panning out like he hoped so he quit science and joined the FBI. Quite different and he's not using his PhD training much, but he ******* loves it, and I understand they are hiring and they have an office in Houston. He does everything from investigating fraud cases to assisting on drug raids, gets to drive fast and shoot guns, etc. Some travel involved but most of the time he's working out of his main office in DC. I'm just saying that there are some federal govt jobs that don't suck and that serve a more legitimate purpose (or at least not 100% uselessly bureaucratic) if you want to feel better about your career choice and still have job security.

Marriage is a legal construct with legal consequences, particularly regarding rights and duties to children.
If governments stop officially registering marriages, then who gets to adopt? How are child support and child custody issues determined if the government doesn't recognize marriage? How about a private company's health care plans, whom will those cover? Who has legal authority to issue "do not resuscitate" orders to doctors? Who inherits in the absence of a will? Who is entitled to a person's Social Security and Medicare benefits? How do you know if you're divorced and able to remarry? Where would liberals get their statistics about most marriages ending in divorce?
None of the above have to do religion, tough guy.

I think she can do fine for 700 a month down here. Just got to pick right. My one bedroom was about 700. A few blocks down it is not so nice. I would not live there but on the other side of me I have million dollar homes in a gated community. Got to love Houston and our practically non existing zoning laws. The apartments where I am are nice, clean, and pretty quiet.

Hustler are you a contracting officer? **** is corrupt wherever you go, government or private sector. Its part if the game.
Sounds like you did allright in sales if you weren't fired. Sales is the heart of business and business in the usa is doing fantastically. Particularly big business.
If you have an interest in money then why not get another sales job? There are much better sales jobs out there. The pay for enterprise sales is high, approaching Goldman Sachs pay. Entry level doing inside sales (basically telemarketing) can pay up to 120K. 70K starting should be easily attainable- just be the likeable jerk in the interview that you are on the forums and they will hire you. I'm serious.
Regarding the girl, what will her PhD be in? Is it a moneymaking degree? If she will be making 15k a year for the rest of her life I would factor that into my decision too.
