MOVING TO HAWAII!!!
It's my week for threads in the BS forum.
So... I have 3 years (from today, actually) left in the Navy. I will be Mr. Sam on July 1st, 2020. I've been working with my detailer on my next set of orders that will be for 30months... the only guidance I gave him was "doesn't suck" and "I'm not moving". Up until now, he's been really solid on the latter, and not even close on the former. It's my terminal tour, and I'm not gonna promote to O-5, so I've basically got no cards left. The wife and I have finally been feeling "home" here in VaBch... have plans that include buying another house here in great high school district and then getting a job in the defense industry or DOD and riding that for another 20yrs and then actually retire. Things are really solid.
But on Friday he sends me an email that reads: "How about Range Officer at Barking Sands"... which I figured was Afghanistan until I looked it up. FML... now what do I do?

Hawaii is awesome.
To visit.
I'll hold your guns for you while you finish your rotation.
Seriously though, how many times have you moved in the last 20 years?
It might be nice to finish off with an easy job in a pretty place.
Pretend it's a really long vacation.
The North shore is nice.

Oahu is pretty sweet. If you can swing accomodations on Ford Island you will live in the most secure neighborhood in the world. Kids can ride, run, play. Sailing classes. North shore surf watching when the winter big swells hit.
Definitely worth considering hard. Look at leasing your current home if you don't want to sell.

I've accepted orders to Barking Sands. I'll detach from my job here in Virginia Beach and report for duty on the island mid-January. This will take me to 20yrs... retirement July 2020.
Things to do in the meantime:
Sell house... we close in 4 days!!!
Buy new 4x4 vehicle to replace Speed6.
Quarantine Dog (Hawaii takes rabies very seriously).
Purge all the things... moving into a house half as big, with half the storage, and half the garage.
Lose 20lbs.
Get the wife into a Masters Program
Start speaking every sentence with "brah" at the beginning and end.
Finally learn to bow-hunt.
Buy a speargun.
Acquire sweet 10rd magazines.
And 200 more things.

Aww yeah.
You have to do the rent-the-houseboat-thing and go a mile or two offshore to the big sandbar that's 3' under water. Park the boat and party, get out and walk. Pretty wild. Throw football, frisbee in 3' of water while off shore. While surrounded by hella lots of fellow gun-toting military families.

We went to Kauai for our honeymoon; it was amazing. It's tiny, and there are chickens EVERYWHERE. Seriously though, it's really beautiful; one of the most incredible places I've ever been. Kauai is particularly awesome because it is the least touristy and developed; the whole northwest quarter of the island has no roads at all; you can only see it by hiking or helicopter. Also, the locals say it has the best surfing of all the islands too, since it's way out by itself on the north end of the chain; there were 30 foot waves while we were there. Anyway, good luck, and enjoy it!

Kauai is fabulous. Stellar. Magnifique. Top Shelf. I've been twice, both times without children, want to go back.
I failed at google initially and thought Sam had been posted to the base on the North Shore of Oahu. Kauai is the ideal place to wind out 20 years. Learn to paddleboard, bruh.
