Financial Independence/Early Retirement

Zero percent interest is financed by the accrued 19.99% interest backcharges on those who didn't pay off their balance before the deferred interest period ended, or paid late, or any of the other 20 reasons the lender could use as an excuse to claim you defaulted on the terms of the agreement.

In short, they recognize the reality that "retirement", as we know it, probably won't happen. If I'm going to be working part time at 70 anyway, I might as well enjoy surfing and hiking in Hawaii while I'm 40, because retiring in at 70 means eating dinner at 4pm and trying not to **** your pants.

I have a dream to be a garbage man. Always have wanted to. Engineering was more fun to do in school but that dream still exists. Savings and a lot of IRA money from an earlier career could maybe let me follow my dream. Ideally I'd like to own a small family owned garbage company with a few trucks, but with the Waste Management takeover in Portland/Everywhere thats looking less and less likely.

I've known my garbage man my whole life. He says hi to me and we reminisce on how small I used to be. I want people on my route to know my name and say hi to me.

Pipe dreams...

I'm not planning on actually retiring at 40...but I'm also not interested in being forced to work until I'm 70. "Retiring at 40" for me is a short hand way of saying that I'll have a significant measure of financial security and lots of options open to me. Maybe at 45 I decide I want to quit my job and start my own business. Or maybe I want to work 20 hours a week and spend more time with my family. Or maybe I want to take 2 or 3 years off and travel. Or maybe we have some massive, unexpected financial loss and I want to be able to weather it.

^^That to. Right now I could lose everything and I mean everything, and be relatively fine. I have no dependents, I could move back in with my parents, I have no debt. If I'm 40 with 3 kids and my parents have moved into some small cabin in the wilderness (which they will) and I suddenly lose everything, life will suck a lot more.

Anyone have experience with this? Cool concept, and automation is nice. They've been pushing hard on the advertisements.
Any gotcha's?
