Crappy cell phone pic but that Utopia was $249.99. Don't know if I'll ever spend that much on a bottle of any beverage, but if I do it's more likely to be an extensively aged single malt Scotch.

1. It was cold that night.
2. They are awesome, crafted from only the richest Corinthian leather.
3. Call me The Annandale Strangler again and I'll have to strangle you.
I would kill to get another pair of these awesome gloves. But seriously, I don't remember seeing that one when I was in USVI and I was pretty disappointed with the beer selection in general down there. The Ft. Christian Brewpup in Christiansted had some quality brews, but for the most part the restaurants we went to just had typical megaswill. If I ever make it back there I'll keep a lookout for it. If it has the bottle deposit redemption info in the top label it's probably distributed somewhere in the mainland, but I've never seen it here in VA.

I was given one of these a few weeks ago.
Strong for a lager at 7%, but you'd never know it from its smoothness. Very malty for a lager. Low bitterness and low carbonation so it tempts you to drink it more quickly than you should. A nice change but I'm not going out of my way to find it.
Update: I will definitely be drinking at 9:30am on Saturday. Best Florida Beer Championships, Professional Division is being judged Saturday at Cigar City Brewing Co. and It turns out I will be in town to help steward the event. It is not a public event, but if EJL or somebody else wants to come by or help shoot me a pm with your name and #. There will be brew pubs, micro brews and a few bigger brewers represented in dozens of categories. I'm excited!

The Best Florida Beer Competition went off without a hitch on Saturday. There were 107 entries in a bunch of categories. It was all professional brewers from brewpubs to micro breweries to Yuengling (which has a large brewery in Tampa) so there was a wide variety.
I stewarded the "Belgian Witbeers and Flavored Ales" category first and then the "Experimental and Out of Category" beers. There was a good Saison in the first flight but the rest were meh. Not so much my thing.
The "experimental" and "out of category" flight was very interesting. The first was a Berliner weisse made with sour mash and brewed with tomatoes, peppercorn, and who knows what else. It was designed to emulate a sour tasting bloody mary; weird. There were a couple of good "Black IPAs" and an interesting Porter made with black currants. The last one was a Russian Imperial Stout made with vanilla beans, cacao beans, and two different kinds of chile peppers. It was a dessert beer if ever there was one. It was so rich and thick that the head on it was nearly black. It had some malty sweetness and the warmth from the peppers made me think of sipping it in front of a fireplace on a cold night. It was probably slightly high in alcohol content as well. Interesting stuff. It was called Hunaphu's Imperial Stout
There were many others as well and I got to try quite a few of them for helping out. There were IPAs out the ying yang.
The actual judging was held in a corner of the warehouse/brewing floor at Cigar City Brewing. Here is a shot of a judging table with a brewing vat in the background. There were brewing vats everywhere in there.
