When did VW bring all of teh stylists from the 911 team over to the Golf team? I guess they weren't busy not redesigning the 911, so they had plenty of time to not redesign the Golf...

Actually, the stylists were originally on loan from VW in the first place.
They only didn't redesign the 911 in their spare time, when they weren't busy not redesigning the main product line.
Serious answer: Why do we feel it necessary to constantly change the cosmetic styling of cars just for the sake of change? When did the designers of women's clothing and purses start running the auto industry?
Our economy is based on selling products instead of services to repair them. Get to Jonesing, Joe.

It's still obviously recognizable as a VW Golf, in the same way that an NC is instantly recognizable as a Miata, despite the fact that it shares no parts or body metal in common with one.
However I've learned that my own automotive habits are not representative of those of humans. Many people buy new cars at regular intervals simply because they wish to drive a car which is less than "X" years old, or has fewer than "X" miles on it.
Case in point: during the 1960s and 1970s, many people purchased new Volkswagens at regular intervals, despite the fact that the majority of the parts from this year's model would fit just fine on last year's.
Ironically, I'm sitting in the lab right now running a long series of tests designed to stress the source recruitment code in a large network of Vistamax devices. In our internal lingo, the process of recruiting a source is called Jonesing. (As in the drug reference, not the consumer culture reference.)
This is a random picture:
Literally, random. As in, I mashed a bunch of keys into the search box, closed my eyes, hit PgDn a bunch of times, then clicked the mouse randomly on the screen.
