Funny, I was playing Metroid just the other day. I have an emulator (NESren?) running on the media-center PC in the living room, and a USB gamepad which is fairly similar to the original NES controller. (Stylistically, it's more of a knockoff PS1 controller, but without the analog sticks.)

And it has a Turbo button, just like the old NES Advantage. Makes all the difference. :D

Speaking of which, I still have an Advantage lying around somewhere. I need to get off my ass and convert it to USB.

16 bit? Dude, the AGI game engine ran in an 8 bit environment. That game ran just fine on an Apple II, or on a 256k, 8088-equipped Tandy 1000 HX (my first x86-class machine.)

PQ1 ran in the same engine. PQ2 was written in SCI and ran at 320x200 (EGA).

I sort of lost interest in KQ after #5 (that was the first VGA one, right?)

Space Quest was my favorite series, and I had kind of the same let-down experience there. #1-3 were great, 4 was good, and I never finished 5. It just sucked that much.


By that time, of course, LucasArts had really gotten into full swing. Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Full Throttle, even Grim Fandango was excellent, despite being in a foo-foo 3D environment.

On a totally unrelated yet highly ridiculous note, while my wife and I were in Thailand on the island of Samui, we stayed at a resort that happened to have a restaurant. And at this restaurant they had this heavily accented guitar and vocalist. he played all the weird songs of our youth and random ones from adulthood and fuck me if he didn't just roll from some james taylor into the super mario music. it sounded really good on an acoustic guitar!

The same reason I have enough junk computer hardware to fill two 55 gallon drums, not including the CRT monitors and cases. None of it is worth anything, nor would I or anybody ever want to use them in a build. I just feel attached to them somehow. I keep thinking maybe one day I will do some fun DIY project and need one of the boards. I have put several of the old PSU's to good use, mostly for the wiring and connectors. I have also scavenged pretty much all of the main board standoffs. I have enough spare case fans to build a fucking one man hovercraft. Maybe I will attempt that one day, lol.

Of old computer parts... yes. Somewhat to an extent, car parts as well. Car parts make more sense, since they can be used again. But outdated computer parts are useless for the most part. One day I will probably finally throw them out.

Didn't think they used the Mosler name back then, just Consulier. Ugly as sin but fast as shit. If I remember correctly, the company co-sponsored some kind of track day with Car & Driver (back when C/D did some cool stuff) and basically challenged anyone to show up with a street-legal car that could beat their lap times. There were some NSX's, RX-7 R1's, maybe a 348, a C4 Corvette or two, and I'm pretty sure at least one Diablo and one F40. Nothing touched the Consulier.

Amazingly, it got even uglier when they went to a split front window. The new Mosler stuff is decent looking though.

And on that note, has anyone seen the magazine ads recently from Mosler? Basically, they are liquidating all their older showroom/test/museum cars, with prices ranging from something like $15k to $100k if I recall.
